What is the purpose of the USB pass through?

You can send digital files/information/pictures to the hard drive in this "fireproof" safe without having to open it up, plug it in, etc. Same reason as having a power outlet, gives the user the option to secure more than just his/her weapons.

For a safe that large it doesn't weigh much, Just saying.

Cannon safe's that Costco sells are not really "safes" in the true definition. They are actually rated as residential security containers. They have lighter gauge steel and shorter fire ratings. They are designed for security from children and "grab and dash" theft. A safe has heavier gauge steel and better tamper security, better fire ratings, and will consequently weigh more.

FWIW, here's a link to Cannon site for what appears to be exactly same product:
http://www.cannonsafe.com/series/scout/s33.html

Clicking on different safes it looks like every single one of them is built from 12ga steel, the difference in weight probably comes mostly from fireproofing materials.

Safe is up for sale @$999 on the website now

I just talked to Cannon about it and they said its the same safe as the Scout 33. Possibly with a different graphic. She mentioned its only avail in black, but the Costco website shows and says the grey color...

Estimated opened depth is about 59" she said, which unfortunately makes it either not fit or REALLY REALLY tight fit in the closet where I wanted to put it... Garage install or smaller safe?

not a bad deal, but it's a bit light and the fire rating leaves a little to be desired. I would still go with a Bighorn, IMMFO.

If security features are an issue for you, don't waste your money on this one. I purchased a Cannon CS-20 "executive vault" from Costco during a sale they had going in March/April and was so disappointed with the security features (though, admittedly, the small size of that model ended up being a factor for me as well) on it that I returned it and, as you said, bought a Liberty.

This Cannon has a whopping four(4) active locking bolts total, and they are all on one side, opposite from the hinges. A like sized Liberty Colonial series safe has eleven(11) active locking bolts, five on each side and one on top. The Colonial 50 I ended up with has 13(it is a foot taller than this Cannon safe), 6 on each side and one on top, and a 45-minute fire rating. Same warranty except they don't cover you for "natural flooding"...don't think most of us would have any of that in CA, and Liberty actually warranties their locks for 5 years as opposed to 1. More money = better safe.

Don't spend half the money on an inferior safe, buy it once, buy the right one. Get the Liberty. Just my $.02.

This is cool, though.

New Built in USB & RJ45 Pass though allows an external hard-drive to be easily backed up in safe.

More bolts aren't necessary

Their Many Moving Dead Bolts

For example, when you are looking at money vaults that are nearly the size of our 2723 safe, you will notice they have one of the highest security ratings listed at TL30, and they only have 3 (moving) locking lugs, none of which are located on the bottom or top of the door. You might wonder how is it that a safe with a total lug count of 5 can be rated one of the highest in security and the answer is this: a smart locking assembly and lots of thick steel. We feel gun safes should be treated this same way. It's not the number of deadbolts that make it more secure, it's the smart locking assembly and the thick steel. Remember, it doesn't matter how many thick moving dead bolts safes on the market throw out, it still wont stop a burglar from penetrating through the side if the safe if it only has 10 gauge of steel or less on the walls.

test it :D

I helped my friend install this exact safe in his closet. Not a bad safe/security container at all. Bolted it to the floor and wall. I see noone getting into it by brute force. And that would still require time. Time that a secure household should never afford a thief. His was black outside, tan inside. Worth the money, especially at that discount IMHO...

That's an awesome price. I bought a smaller one bout two years ago for around same price. Yes it's not super heavy duty, but does the job of keeping the young ones away from my toys and adds a layer of protection against burglary.

you can hack through 10 and especially 12 gauge steel with a fire pick axe. The extra bolts don't mean anything if you can chop your way in with an axe.\

How would one show a gun shop that this is an approved safe? It doesn't look like its on the california doj list.

There's a particularly picky gun shop I've dealt with in the past for transfers, and one of the guys always wants to see a receipt as the signed affidavit isn't enough for him. if this doesn't show up on the doj list, he may say still a gun lock is needed at time of pick up.

no safe is 100% safe, its just a layer in a multi layered system of security. Most safes can be breached in less than 10 minutes....hopefully the police will arrive after they get the alarm which is set off inside the safe when the motion and prox sensors are tripped.

If not there is always insurance.
