as stated i've got 1500 to spend maybe little more on a new rifle i'm torn between the following:

1. galil
2. fal
3.hk usc
4. hk sl8 (heard that these can be made g39/g36 style)

i have 2 ar types already and many bolt actions. help me with some input and other suggestions. cant wait to hear your input thanks everyone!

1. Not much choice here. Either get the CA golani (spotty history) for around 600-800, or get ready to fork over alot more than just 1500 for a real unmarked galil (I think the last price I saw was a little over $2200).

4. g36 style conversion will cost a good amount. The sl8 on it's own doesn't seem too popular, and is likely to cost you closer to $2000 not including conversion costs, not your estimated $1500

All I can say is i'm sure you'll enjoy any of those 4. I'm jealous of your $1500 to spend on a rifle =P

Your listed guns are all very different from each other. Whats the purpose of this rifle? Just want something baddazz? What range you shooting? Ammo cost any concern? You plan to accessorize it? Gonna run a scope?

If it's mostly for fun, get whatever looks/feels best to you. I personally don't like pistol chambered rifles. To me a pistol is a pistol & a rifle is a rifle. No need to mix them. The FAL is a legendary battle rifle with a long history. .308 is expensive though. The Galil has it's own charm. .223 is more affordable. I'm a big HK fan, but the SL8 & USC don't do it for me. For some reason I've never been interested in either. Check out the PTR91 or Vector V93 for an HK style rifle. Very cool.

From what I've heard, plus shooting my friend's sl8:

- It's not bad, just not great. Not worth the 1800-1900 it will cost you unless you want a g36 clone
- Ergonomics (esp thumbhole) isn't the best - this I agree with
- It's front heavy
- Conversion to G36 costs a good amount so many people give up
- If the conversion isn't done well the gaps make it look sloppy

Pros:
- It's very unique, and to use your terminology, quite "badazz" cosmetically
- Reliable: friend's has gone through thousands with no failures
- Decently accurate
- Pull off a well made g36 clone and it will be the envy of many many gun enthusiasts. Including me :D

the g36 has been my dream for a long time so far only thing i have close to that is a airsoft gun....fail...but 308 is expensive so fal is awesome (ive shot one) but the usc/ump is g36 looking (kinda) and shoots 45acp which i have alot of. dam this is hard

HK SL8 $2450 http://lanworldinc.com/ProductDetails.aspx?prodid=HK227553-A5
I think a mag adapter would be a good way to go too! $232 +- http://www.hkparts.net/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=800&idcategory=13
Actually I vote for none of the above. $1500 ain't gonna do it unless you can get a REAL deal on the used market.
