View Full Version : Do you clean your mag?

after several trips to the range, i checked my checkmate mags, not that it is malfunctioning, and noticed some black marks. it was residue from the gun powder.

I clean my 1911 every trip to the range, but not my mags. how do often do you clean your mags? do they need cleaning at all? :o:o:o

I never clean mags, but most my guns are Glocks and have never had a malfunction. If I started getting some problems then I'd certainly look at cleaning the mags.

Every time they touch the dirt. If they haves powder residue, I toss them in the tumbler for a few minutes.

Yes, if they get dirty - as in dirt dirty. Powder residue is no biggie, they don't need to be uber clean or something. Sometimes just blowing some compressed air through it is fine enough.

I wipe them down... but none of them has had real heavy use...

Not regularly but I do from time to time! Usualy if they start to have enough grime that it leaves residue on my hands. Never have I had a magazine give me issues, then again I don't yet have a 1911. I don't know (or think) they are any more finiky than the guns I do own.

Only my handgun mags, my 10/22 mags are pretty well neglected. My rationale is I live in a desert, I shoot in a desert and I'd like to keep my mags fully functional for years to come.

once every 2-3000 rounds. If you drop them on dirt then every 200-300 rounds.

If they get dirt or other crap in them. Other than that, nope.

I look at them every time i clean my guns and if they look dirty i'll clean them. If i just shot a competition or am going to then i definitely do.

i clean mines once in a while.

I clean mine every five trips to the range, I have a mag brush and it works well.

I clean them once in a while, maybe once every couple of years. As others have said, if they get rolled around in the dirt or wet, I absolutely clean them.

After a range visit I will just wipe them down. If I am shooting somewhere else and they get dropped in the sand or dirt I will take them apart and clean them.

hmm. good question
ive never cleaned a mag except new mil surp. like old ak mags. take em apart and remove excess oil.
or the time i bought a 4 pack of PSL mags from centerfire systems. they were so rusty one of them might not be functional.. i started removing the rust and some of the pits went clear thru..

when i got a new bersa thunder 380 mag it came soaked in oil, it was so bad that rounds would go in dry and come out wet :p so i clean off all the extra oil. every now and then i will clean out my glock mags, but thats only when i feel like it.

Pitch'em in the ultrasonic every 2k rounds or so. The worst are my 10/22 mags, go figure.
