I would always choose a Smith and Wesson revolver over a Taurus. I don't know that I would ever want .357 in that small of a package either.

Smith over Taurus. You know what you'll be getting with a Smith, with a Taurus its a gamble.

Of the 2 choices S&W for the win.

Neither...If you want a revolver get a Ruger or S&W. Don't waste money on a Taurus.

Do you want a .38 special of .357? Again...get the ruger or S&W. Do you want a j-frame of larger gun?

Ruger SP101 or GP 100...Any S&W...I like the 640-.357, 442/642-.38special, 686+.

The S&W, because it's a S&W. But....porting on a carry gun, not so good of an idea IMO.

S&W. No question about it.

Smith & Wesson hands down.

Why do you want a ported snubbie? For a carry gun, where you may have to use it in a pocket or in very close proximity to your body, I wouldn't' want all the gas blowing in my face or body parts. Just my .02

I have to say that the polymer revolvers from Smith, Ruger and Taurus are not the prettiest guns I've ever seen....darn ugly, actually.
I am a function over form guy, but wow, they sure could have made them look better.
I'd go with the Smith between the OP's two choices.

Seems like you want a ported short barrel wheelgun. I had a S&W Performance Center 442 with a ported barrel. That had way too much muzzle flash. Didn't like it at all.

If I were to choose a small frame revolver, I would get a 3 inch Ruger SP101 or an older S&W 60.

S&W for sure. Quality and ease of working on, parts ect. Next, you just can't get .357 velocities out of a 2.5" or 3" barrel. All you get is BLAST and recoil. Stick with the .38 with some good +P's (and even that's questionable)and be done with it.
I shoot a stock 637 with standard velocity 125gr HP's. I don't think I need a compensator. BTW a good set of Laser-Lyte J's or Crimson Trace laser grips goes a long way to making these little belly guns more useful at greater than bad breath distances.

If you are going to carry this as a self defense CCW gun, I'd buy some used coats at Goodwill or other thrift store (as i did) and practice shooting out of the pocket for your first couple of shots at close range. It's practical, it's reality and you'll be suprised how accurate you can be with practice. But you will only get one or two shots out of each side of the coat :-) so buy a few. I learned this trick from a CHP officer. Couldn't understand why he wore his jacket all year round....now I know. The whole time he was speaking with a motorist, his left hand was wrapped around a J frame in his pocket. No aggressive posture, just a casual conversation, unless the suspect did something awfully stupid.
S&W....S&W....because, I do believe, they are once again American owned.

I'd go with the S&W, it'll be more costly, but worth it imo.

My general rule of thumb for wheelguns.. stick to S&W or Ruger.

I like Colts, but they're too expensive.

I might make the exception for Chiappa Rhino though :)

Hard choice for me to make.

I own revolvers from both makers and the S&W's are the better guns. Even my "lemon" 686 is now better than any Taurus I've owned. Once I got to where I could afford S&W, I sold all the Taurus revolvers but one pretty good 357 and a 22 I use for varmints.

OTOH, I do not like ported guns for self defense.

If I had to choose which one I'd bet my life on I'd get the S&W. It's not ideal but, as others have pointed out, the odds of getting a good guns from S&W are better than Taurus.

OTGH, the Taurus will probably be less expensive that the S&W and money may be a limiting factor.

+1 I agree on both counts.

I have a Taurus 85 .38 spl snubbie. Mine is a great gun and I've never had a problem with it. I was looking at a Bersa .380 and the Taurus gave me more power for the same price.

Having said that, if money is no issue, get the S&W. It's like comparing a Hyundai to a Mercedes.

Of course, you could enter the 21st century and get an automatic.....

S&W! if it is your first wheelgun, do it right the first time.

I appreciate all the responses.

In regards to wheel guns, I own the following:

Taurus Tracker 44Mag, Taurus Tracker 357Mag, S&W 637 Stainless, and NAA 22Mag/22LR Combination.

In regards to Taurus, I've had one issue with the Taurus 357 mag. They replaced the barrel about 4 months ago free of charge. There was some type of abnormality. Both trackers are fun to shoot! Also, those Taurus' patented Ribber design grips are awesome. I can shoot both trackers all day one-handed without any problems.

I saw both revolvers displayed above and thought to myself, "I want one of those two." I'm going to buy the Smith & Wesson.

Thanks for the help!

The S&W is around $580.00 and the Taurus is around $100 cheaper.

i dont know from first hand experience, but ive heard alot of people speak negatively about the quality of taurus pistols. on the other hand, s&w has a great reputation.
