With a few upgrades! You may or may not remember, I posted here about my failed MPA mini welds. (1 on frame, and all 4 on the welds holding the muzzle brake) After almost 3 weeks it is now home again, looks even better, they blasted and re-finished it a darker black color, which matches the new upper. I didnt want to mess with anymore welded brakes over threaded barrels so I just went the non-threaded route. Upper was $62 shipped. Heres before and after photos.

I hope its not a common problem. MPA has great customer service, i've sent the gun back before because of a broken rollpin and they always take care of ya. Lifetime warranty.

The brakes should NOT be welded. Welding by itself is prone to breaking, particularly on a short barrel.

The brake needs to be blind pinned and welded to have been done properly.

Just having 4 tack welds is an accidental aw waiting to happen.

On the first Mac I ever built I had the same problem with the thread protector which I had welded on cracking off.

It's just not a prudent way to do it.

My 2 cents

well, i dont think it is. masterpiece arms has a great reputation for product reliability. i think your case was the only one ive heard of where the welds broke.

honestly though, just looking at the welds, it seems like they really could have more to them

I make a thread protector and bore the brake out to O.D. to the protector. That protector is pinned and welded to the barrel, there is a recess drilled into the protector and I use a set screw to hold the fake can in place.

I just called MPA and spoke with Darah Smallwood. I requested that they build me a custom upper with the threads machined off and they did. Its a special order item so it can take up to 2 weeks.

You mind asking me how much that was?

Did you talk to a gunsmith about turning the threads off or pinning and welding a thread protector?

I talked with a couple but it was actually cheaper to just order one from MPA since I was looking for a side cocker with a rail anyways so I just had MPA build me one.

Nice!
I have the mini 9 top cocker & bump firing that with the stock drilled muzzle brake was a little too sketch for me, left round burn marks on my thick skinned palm- didn't hurt- just didn't like having my hand so close to the muzzle.

So I ordered the 6" fake threaded can & cut the welded pin on the muzzle brake and threaded on the fake can in the dead of night.....shhhhhh  :D
locktighted & drilled & pinned & welded over the pin, dressed her up a bit & she looks bad a** and I can bump fire all my "normal" capacity mags away..... in Nevada:rolleyes:... oh well.
I should go take a pic & post.
