View Full Version : Handguns to buy before moving to Cali

Hey y'all,
New to the forum. I'm a Chico, CA native but joined the navy out of high school and spent 8 years in the submarine force. I'm getting out of the military in July, and am planning to move back to Chico. I'd like to poll the members here to find out what firearms I should purchase while I'm still out of the state, what with the "safe gun list" in Cali and everything. So, what guns would you buy, that California doesn't allow dealers to sell? For example, the Ruger LC9 is a great CC weapon, but not legal for purchase in Cali (at least for now). I'm sure I'll be picking one up before making the move. Anything else I should be purchasing?

Anything off list. Then you can advertise it on the classifieds for way more than it's worth and bump it daily for a couple of months...

Resale is not what I had in mind, I just don't want to get to California and think "Oh I'd like to have one of those" only to find out I can't buy it in California, and if I'd only known, I could have purchased it before moving.

The approved list is in a sticky.

If it was me it would be older S&W revolvers. If you're into tacticool stuff, buy that. Usually to be on the list a gun needs some features of which I am not particularly fond.

Depends on what ya like.

Kel-Tec P-11's are definitely going to be snatched up if you buy them and bring them here for sale. And they aren't that expensive either, less than $300.

mpa mac clone, or a romanian draco AK pistol would both make fine additions to your collection. just be sure to have a bullet button installed on the draco

Probably guns that are difficult to single shot/exempt. I'd say HK squeeze cockers, rarer revolvers etc.

You can single shot exempt a lot of guns now.....get something you cant....like an hk p7 m13.

Welcome back...!

HK P30 9mm

HK45

CZ Phantom

HK Mark 23

FNP .45 tactical

Gen4 GLOCKs like the G21 and G20 if they are available yet.

XDM 9MM in OD frame.

Rhino .357 revolver

On the High cap mags, just take them apart and label them rebuild kits.

GSG 1911 - 22 (sell it to me if you choose not to like it... :D) Les Baer has some nice 1911s that are not "CA approved" that could be a nice investment if don't like them later on.

If it were me I would buy a M&P pro series with the 5" barrel. Fits my hand way better than the glock. Also a sig X5 tactical ?(my dream gun)

STI 1911. They won't sell to CA

If you like the AR pistol setup you could buy a lower and have it dros as other and build a pistol the way you want it. I built one on a S&W M&P lower when I lived in Las Vegas.

This is a variation on the "what gun should I buy?" theme. It really depends what you intend to use it for.

There are a few 1911 variants I'd consider that aren't sold in Cali. I think someone may have already mentioned a few. Small handguns intended for concealed carry are rather hard to come by here unless you're a LEO. A SIG P238 is near the top of my own list. Most of us here would like a Taurus Judge or Public Defender but I don't think we would be allowed to keep it in Cali anyway, seems to me that guns that fire shotgun shells have to have a minimum barrel length of like 18" making those revolvers illegal here regardless of how it got here.

Anyhoo, happy gun shopping. Keep us informed as to your acquisitions...

Bring some older model colt 1911s. You can't really go wrong if you don't like them. They sell for good money.

You might enjoy shooting some of the better built 10mm Auto 1911's. 10mm is awesome... a purpose built 1911 for shooting 10mm is freakin sweet.

If you ever grow weary of it, or it's just too much gun for you, there's definitely a market for sweet guns that aren't rostered... and the rarities will fetch a premium. You'll probably make a couple hundred over the new price for your used pistol. (depends on HOW rare it is... ).

ignore the Gen4 glock people... there's a steady stream of them coming in via roster-exemptions

Just a cautionary note, and probably an obvious one. The roster isn't the only buzzkill in California - some guns, like the Judge or Public Defender or whatever, that are basically revolvers that also shoot a .410 shell, are illegal regardless of the roster. As are, of course, hi cap mags. Sorry if that's obvious but I didn't want your out of state exuberance to land you in hot water. I didn't notice anyone suggesting anything dicey.

If you're going to get a CCW in Cali, you might eyeball some of the small pocket pistols, many of which are not on the roster. For me, the Kimber Solo comes to mind. The LCRs are popular. THe LC9 is now on the roster and available here.

Couple Kahrs, Glock G4 and an XDM, and all the standard capacity magazine kits you can get your hands on.

Chico State alum here

I'd personally get some STI 1911's and 2011's.

He's in Chico, not many FFL's around that area that might accept a single-shot transfer... not unless you drive at least 3 hours south to the Bay Area or a couple hours south into Sacramento.

I would get a Kahr or 2, XDM and XDM 3.8SC (nice combo), Rhino would be super rare...

There are enough firearms I can think of off the top of my head that would cost as much as a quality car combined. Do you have an idea of what your budget is? Your best bet is to take the advice of those above me. Get a list of what you really want in the next couple years. Then check it against the list and see what you should get. Best of luck to you.

CA has lame laws as a result the prices get a bit high for reality. Just like homes here a bit over inflated. Sooooo for you the better thing to do is get the guns that you can legally have and want here and get them for CHEAPER OUTSIDE of this state.

Heck you can get all sorts of goodies cheaper than CA and in much more variety than CA such as AK patterns.

try and get one of those here. You can't easily make one into an off list single shot. They can be built into fantastic 9mms, .38 Supers and .45s. They'd make good trade fodder as well.
