I recently bought a Kimber Custom II TLE/RL but was wondering who makes the best 1911s out of the box? I know of speingfield TRPs and Wilson Combat but what else is there?

It really depends on how much you want to spend... There is a bunch of different tiers in pricing out there... The Dan Wesson PM-7's are a REALLY good buy for a out of the box decent priced 1911...

Les B's are awesome!

Kimber TLE/RLII best out of the box.

Springfield 1911 TRP :devil2:

My Kimber stainless II was awesome right out the box. Of course I made some mods to make it better; VZ G10 grips, 10-8 grip screw, ambi safety and steel msh w/ magwell.

hey tacdriver what round is that in your signature?

I have a sig sauer 1911 xo and it is a tack driver, nice features included and it will shoot any commercial ammo I feed it. I will be selling it though because it absolutely hates swc that I reload so it has to go. If you don't intend on using swc then it is a great gun.

I don't have a lot to go by because have not fired a ton of different 1911's, but the standard SS SW1911 I bought 3 years ago has not had one hiccup in 3,000 rounds of all sorts of FMJ and HP (all 230 gr) and easily the most accurate handgun I own including all my 9mm's. Absolutely love it. I am sure the higher end Les Bauer's etc are amazing, but for a good price, I have loved my SW1911. Although the 1911 purists will rag on it for having an external extractor, I love this handgun more than any other I own, even the ones that cost me twice as much.

Besides Wilson Combat, there is Cylinder and Slide, Springfield Armory Professional, Les Baer, Nighthawk, Ed Brown and I probably missed one or two semi custom 1911s. These are all hand fitted semi custom pistols, but not full customs. I included them, because you included Wilson Combat. If you're thinking factory level 1911s, my opinion is Springfield TRP. Colt still makes a great production 1911 as well and the Smith and Wesson E series is getting a lot of good reviews from Hilton Yam.

I had a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special that was flawless out of the box, but it was almost too tight.

I had a Dan Wesson CBOB that hands down, was my best ever pistol out of the box.

Les Baer.

Out the box, I'd have to say the best would be Wilson Combat.

My favorite gun is a Baer but Baer's aren't the best gun out the box, they don't truly shine until they've been shot a bit. Mine came into its own between 3-5k down the pipe.

Good place to start if you're looking for a quality 1911 out of the box.

As far as kimber's quality (or lack therof), I'd recommend reading the following.

My favorite personal gun is a heavily modified colt 70's series with a bunch of work done. My next favorite shooter is my Dan Wesson PM7. The last one that I don't shoot is an Ithaca 1943 model. Its a safe queen and only been shot once.

A Kimber TLE/RL II should be high up on the list when you factor in price too. A great gun.

My Baer P2 is still tight (feels like brand new) after 4k, runs flawlessly now. It had a little hiccup in its first 200 rounds. I figure Baers are always going to be out of the box tight, and feel brand new.

In my not so humble opinion (based on four high-end .45's in the safe), I believe Baer's Thunder Ranch Special is the best "right out of the box" 1911 you can get. Sure, it may take a while to break in, but as it gets better with use, so will you.

Dan Wesson - Best out of the box for quality and price.

04-24-2011, 2:09 AM
For a budget. I would say a sig 1911. But "out of the box" you can get a $3000 1911. That is not really a good comparison to a $1000 1911.

You need to narrow it down.

For the price? Dan Wesson.

If you want bells and whistles... Les Baer or SA Pro.
