View Full Version : Can't get to your gun, alternative home defense

Let's say for whatever reason, you can't get to any firearms at all... I know I'll have tons of people chiming in how their gun is always within reach in their home and ready to go.. but lets just take that out of the equation...

Good alternative home defense that wouldn't make you look like the villain in our court?

I think the all-American standard would be a baseball bat... but what about this?

yea, bat has always been my standard.. because you don't have to hide it at all. No real chance of accidents other than maybe stubbing your toe and guests don't stare at you funny.

but.. handling the bat yesterday.. made me think if there was possibly something better. I guess having a bat made of denser materials would work.. to me, it just seems like the bat needs too much torque for real damage. Something like the club I posted looks like even a prod to the knee can do some damage due to heft, balance, and density.

Haha, the gun is out of the equation man. I knew someone would somehow work it back into the scenario.

That thing would definitely make you look like a villain in court. Prosecutor, "Look at the exotic and evil weapon the murderer used to torture his victim with!" Jury, "GASP!" Game over.

I know you tried to discount this, but carry the firearm on you. Problem solved.

Yea.. I was thinking the same.. hell, they think nunchucks are lethal weapons of mass destruction.

I suppose.. if you can somehow fashion this thing to look more like an old furniture leg.. it'd look better in court

I'm not keen on the Indian Club thing but it does make me stop and think. I keep my gun in the bedroom which is the opposite side of the house from the living room where we watch TV. Not all home intrusions happen in the dead of night.

Might have to rethink my philosophy of only keeping a gun by the bedside.

Forgot to mention that it's my 5 year old son's, youth, baseball bat. The smaller length is much easier to swing in close quarters of a typical house environment. I like the bat idea because it can sit out in the open and I have no fear of my kids finding it. I don't know if you've ever been accidentally or purposely hit in the head with a bat, but you will see stars for sure. No, it won't instantly kill a man, but if you make contact it will daze him until you can arm yourself IMO.

Haha, its funny.. I've actually been to other countries where firearms aren't easily accessible to regular civies, they market these youth bats as "security batons"

As a side note.. found this.. baseball bat made exclusively for home defense. Denser materials just as I mentioned... dunno about having "Brooklyn Crusher on the side though.... might have to sand that off for the courts.. haha.

I understand your thinking.. but in all honesty.. I don't walk around my house with my gun holstered. Thats like a whole different level of paranoia. I mean.. doesn't it seem kind of backwards to be holstering in your home.. where you're supposed to be the safest.. and then put your gun away when you leave the house (we do live in CA after all)?

And again.. this discussion isn't about having your gun at hand.. haha..

As far as pepper spray though.. isn't it not a good idea to be spraying that indoors? I know it'd mess the intruder up more due to direct contact.. but what about everyone else in the room?

I never said CA isn't a lame state. Ideally I'd be able to carry both in and outside of my home. I think a lot of people have a false sense of security by their wooden doors, store bought locks, double paned glass windows and drywall walls. Time and time again it's been proven that a home is not neccessarily (sp?) a safe place.

I'd look at alternatives that would allow me to reach a fire arm....having to engage with a bat is a fight for survival...i'd want to distract, delay, disorient an offender so I could reach a gun....

Yea.. but as it stands now.. we can't really carry outside.

Never said home was 100% safe.. but in comparison to majority of places outside of my home.. my home is safe.

Every object in my house is a weapon. Either it comes to you or you go to it (pile driver for example, through a coffee table or out a window). I collect Japanese weapons and have them hidden throughout the entire house in great numbers. All are legal by themselves and easy access if you know where they are and I also train with them regularly. Skate boards, tools, office supplies and even clothing make great weapons. I'd like to learn Drunken Kung-Fu to mentally distract an opponent however some of my fighting tactics I've been trained in don't make sense to an opponent until it's too late.

I brought up a question for pepper spray earlier in this thread. I think pepper spray is a good idea.. but I wonder how it is indoors. How it'd affect others in the same room.

On a completely side note.. all this talk about holstering your weapon in your own house has me thinking of a show, featuring a private detective in CA without a CCW. Usually when you watch movies.. you see the detective all tired.. coming home.. and taking off his leather shoulder holster or something and revolver, then placing it on his beside table.. possibly next to a bottle of Scotch or Whiskey.

It would be backwards in this case.. the detective stumbles in home.. all unarmed.. then grabs his holster+gun from bedside table, puts it on.. then goes to bed or watches TV.

in the kitchen, maybe a candlestick.

In the conservatory, a wrench... but if he gets to the study, look out for a lead pipe!

Exactly. Adapt. Improvise. Overcome.

If you are surprised...

...in the garage, grab a wrench.
...in the kitchen, grab a butcher's knife.
...in the living room, grab a lamp.
...in the bathroom, grab some...uh...well, monkeys do it. Makes a great projectile weapon.

Yea.. I think they have a lot of stuff that people fantasize about having (modernized old-war weaponry). Some of it may come off as hokey for the paranoid or weekend commando.. but I think at least they're providing the goods that are well-built and reasonably priced.

Just the fact that I was talking about earlier... thinking a bat might need to be a denser material for better home defense.. then seconds later.. find one created by them - its great!

Don't forget that since you are indoors, the odor will linger and it could affect everyone in that room. Not to mention there have been reports of people accidentally using the pepper spray on themselves. :D

Keep a sidearm in an IWB holster. It ain't paranoia if no one knows. :P

But generally a large kitchen knife will stop anyone in their tracks.

My priority is to prevent anyone from getting inside my house. They sell a tough door reinforcing kit at Lowes. Forgot what it's called but unless they crawl in through a window, they're not getting through that thing.

Pepper spray? In my house? Not on your life. I'll be almost as affected as the target (contact lenses and pepper don't mix well) and the cleanup sucks. I don't usually take my gun off when I come home due to the carry method I most often use. The only time someone's going to catch me without it is on the treadmill or in the shower.

Other than that, as has already been said, everything in my house is a potential impact or cutting weapon at need. Especially the hand-and-a-half sword tucked between the bookcases in the living room. :43:

My personal favorite has always been this. If no really viable weapon is handy, and you're facing an intruder, pick your nose and pull out the biggest thing you can find and point it at the bad guy and move toward him. Even the most hardened criminal doesn't want to get a booger on him.

Good points there. As far as bat goes , i'm not sure if I can handle blood splatter everywhere. My wife would be pissed if I got the carpet stained. :) , but then again it's going to happen anyways if you had to shoot a criminal in self defense.

I know what you're talking about.. and I actually used to train competitively in BJJ as well as Muay Thai... and honestly.. the more I trained.. the less I really ever wanted to use any of it in real life. A lot of joint locks, etc.. leave you vulnerable and susceptible to other attackers.. and even if it was one on one.. just the chance the dude will be carrying a knife...

Luckily.. I've only ever had to use my training once in my adult life. Few years back at a music club, I warned this drunkard 3 times to calm down and when he swung at me, I side-stepped, then hip-tossed him. Bouncers came in really fast and escorted him out. They gave me a free ticket because they knew I could have easily inflicted more harm on him.. but I just wanted to diffuse the situation ASAP.

Yea, I always have a folding knife close by.. but the same with martial arts.. ideally I don't want to get that close and I want to diffuse the situation way before that. The closer melee combat gets.. the more uncontrollable variables and freak accidents that can occur.

Just recently on Calguns there was a video of a watch repair guy in SoCal who had gotten into 4 gun battles after being robbed repeatedly. He said something to the effect that you always had to be within 3 seconds of a gun or you're toast.

In your home I'd imagine you would have more time than 3 seconds. I'm guessing you'd have between 10 and 15 seconds. So if you can have a few weapons hidden around to where you're never more than 10 seconds away from one, you'd be good to go. Assuming you don't have kids that is. If you have kids, you might as well have a dog to help out.

If you only have one gun, get more guns! :D

Depends on what room I am in

Living room, if I have a choice probably the cutlass I have hanging on the wall, if not, well the soldering iron would probably make a good improvised weapon or just about anything else I can get my hands on and throw.

Bedroom, sheets, use them like a net and use the time to get to a better weapon.

Bathroom, straight razor or take a page from our monkey ancestors.

We have dry chem. fire extinguishers in ALL the rooms of the house. If for some reason I don't have access to one of my guns, I'll use the extinguishers. The dry chem will plug up the convicts eyes, and when he gasps in shock, he will get a lung full also. Once said convict is on the floor choking, this should have bought me a few extra seconds to grab a more suitable, and cleaner weapon.

Exactly, that is why you have deversions, TO GET TO YOUR GUN!

Unless you were asking if you were in another house/place that your gun did not exist. That is what I do!

1) LOTS of knives all around this house of varying kinds, suitable for the task at hand.
2) More than a few machetes and axes ... some two-handed.
3) Canes & walking sticks ... we have some.
4) Sjamboks are really a nasty tool in the right hands ... I have two of them.

I'm a big fan of the consumer level Taser. Trust me they work! In fact, they will incapacitate an intruder faster than a pistol ever will. Plus, once you've got the probes in them, after 30 seconds they pretty much can't move. If they do, you zap 'em again. Instruct the intruder to stay still and don't move otherwise they get another one. Repeat until the police arrive to take the perp into custody.

BTW, this is the one I've personally tested (and don't ask me how I know that these are effective!!!! Let's just say it's a personal experience).

A large dowel rod cut from hard wood to a convenient length. It can sit out, nobody even thinks of it as a weapon.

I used to play with my Dad's riot stick. You don't need a big swing with a bat or club to do a LOT of damage. One arm pushes out and the other snaps back. you can generate a lot of speed and only move your arms a few inches.

Good response. Someone here understands the lethality of the weapon.

If you can't get to your (singular) gun, then it sounds like you need more guns :p
That was my first thought.

I'm in a lil' apartment, there's nowhere I'm not within diving distance of a bullet launcher.

Perhaps the question should be if you were staying somewhere away from home where you couldn't have a firearm?
And your host would be put off by you dragging a sword around?

I'd have pepper spray (Hey, it's not my house!), two or three pocket knives, and maybe I could think of an excuse as to why I needed my sharpened Cold Steel shovel with me. And the Surefire light to blind 'em.

A dog is an alarm system that bites. I have a 165lb south african boerboel, who would definitely let me know when its time to pull out the .45, the threat would already be neutralized by the time i got there but if it wasnt i would have the upper hand. Always try to set yourself up to have the upper hand in every situation especially home defense.

How about the club I like to call my mosin m91/30 hung on the wall complete with pig sticker(Living room) realistically though, at home my lc9 is in my pocket, SS .40 watches me bathe, 870 sleeps in the closet 2' from the bed, kitchen has knives pots and pans, back(junk)room has sports equipment (and junk), dining room has dish sets to serve 24 and my side room (off the kitchen) has my retired RV repair tools... 3/4" drive socket set with 2' ratchet and breaker bar. 6' steel pry bar... The only room without a real dangerous weapon is the kids room, but those spoiled brats(thanks grandparents) have more toys than I could shake a stick at...and a 13" easily projected TV, I do miss my 4 legged alarm system though... Looking around, I'm not more than 2 seconds away from a projectile, especially during diaper changes, those damn things get heavy!

Ok, well putting aside the fact I usually have my G29 sitting out on my desk, or in a pocket most of the time I'm home:

- 18" bladed, cord wrapped, mall ninja type short sword - very quick and maneuverable in tight quarters, and virtually invisible held underhand with the blade hidden behind your arm. It'll still chop a green tree branch thicker than an arm bone clean in half, or pierce 1/2" plywood.

- 6P (surefire) style flashlight with custom XM-L LED module. This module is known to produce 1000+ lumens of light out the front. More of a passive defense tool, but you can't fight if all you see is a wall of white light everywhere. It also has a spiky stainless steel bezel for that extra face bashing goodness.

- Cut down 4 foot length of 1" ash rake/tool handle - maneuverable enough to fight with inside, but heavy and hard enough to do some major damage to arms and ribs and faces and stuff. One end is pointy, and one is blunt.

- Sawback 18" machette. Would probably hurt, no matter what edge you hit them with.

What is the lifesaver for?

Hold a place for my SureFire. I had left it in my truck that day. I've since bought a new light for me truck, so the SureFire is in the nightstand permanently.

That and the Wintergreen mint needed a safe place to stay, it was for a Triboluminescence experiment for my Chem 1A course when the picture was taken about 8 months ago.

Wintergreen mints of all types emit light when the candy is bitten into. The light may be very faint, but it can occasionally be spectacular. The effect, called triboluminescence, is due to the electrical charge that builds up within the crystalline structure of the sugar within the candy. The triboluminescence occurs when the electrical charge is violently released as the structure of the crystals is broken. Of course, it isn't just sugary candies that produce this light; when anything is torn or broken, the same thing can occur. When atoms are forced violently apart, they lose a larger portion of their electrons far more quickly than normal. As the electrons search for balance, they bounce around until they find somewhere to rest.

I just yell out "Zed! We got a live one! Bring out the Gimp!" usually intruders, guests, girl scouts, Jehovah's Witnesses will leave quickly.

I keep a maglite in the nightstand, that's it. I've also heard that if you use a baseball bat, you shouldn't SWING the bat, but you should use it to POKE with. A good poke to the solar plexus, or face will be a lot harder to block and quicker than a big swing and will take down a bad guy really quickly. Also a bat is a lot easier to explain than an war club. The advantage of the flashlight is obviously that you can blind someone at night with it. Even better if the flashlight is attached to the front of your shotgun of course!
