HELP!! I want to take the "plunge" too...

I am however debating which to get. I am looking at Stag, Double Star and CMMG. All are about the same price and the on-line photos make them look about the same quality. Would some of you that have one or more of the above chime in and give me your opinion?

I know a lot of you will say use the search function... I did... but reading through 25 pages of posts for each brand was driving me to drink!

Also, the most important Q... is the Rock River Arms LAR-15 OK to purchase? I did not see it named on the "list", but there are other RRAs listed. The RRA is what I really would like to get.

Thanks,

Joe

The RRA LAR-15 is OK to purchase. Get whichever lower you really want, that's what matters most.

The CMMG and Stag as well as the Double Starr are all good recievers, Stag probably has the best warranty reputation. They go out of their way and then some to help customers out. In the end buy the reciever that has the logo you like best.

RRA is A-OK. I have 2 on their way :D

coldwarshooters.com has them in stock for a good price. $145.

CMMG has the nicest finish of the three (Its super smooth) The Stag's finish feels like a chalkboard and is rough...Ive never held a doublestar though

All receivers you mentioned are good. It's a difficult choice. I say, get them all.:)

And why don't you get yourself a MEGA Gator or a Spike?

I am very happy with my Stag. I'll tell you how the CMMG and Superior Arms ones are in about ten days.

Unless you're going to polish it and put it in a glass case, buy anyone of them. They're guns, not art pieces.

How I pick my lowers:
1.Which logo I like the best.
2.Warranty .Even though it's rare to break a lower. I got a stag because they gave the guy that broke his trigger guard, a new lower.
3.Price

Funny, I have all 3. Stag had the worst finish but best cleanup of forge marks. Also, it was too tight on my uppers at the rear takedown pin and required a little grinding on my upper to fit properly. CMMG and DS are exactly the same except for the logo, same forging, same machining, same finish. Finish is great on both and better than Stag. The only difference between the two is the cleanup of the forging mark above the pistol grip, DS is cleaned up better. I'll post a couple pics in a bit with all of them lined up.

Last 3 and darn 10 second limit too!

Notice the lighter, drier finish on the Stag. It appears to be simply hard anodized and thats it. It's not as gray though as the camera makes it appear but it is lighter than the other two. There was also a tiny area where the anodizing or finish coating didn't seem to take as well but it's not shown in the pics very well. You can also see the pocket for the rear take down lug is mil-spec on DS and CMMG but not Stag. Does this mean anything too us? NO, so I wouldn't worry about it. It also looks like Stag uses a drum sander to clean up the forging marks where DS and CMMG mills it. And about the cleanup on the Cmmg. Well, maybe I got one that missed the finishing operation, maybe I didn't. But for the price, DS was the best buy out of all 3 but not the cheapest. I paid $95(Stag), $100(DS), $120(CMMG) respectively. Hope this helps not only the original poster but everyone who reads this.

The question is, does that finishing really hold up batch to batch?

Great pics!

I don't know what any of my lowers look like in that detail.

I built on a CMMG and it had a perfect finish, my Fulton is pretty nice, and my RRA had a crappy finish.

I just DROSed a CMMG and the finish on that bad boy looks great. The double star looks very good in person as well. Much better than my stag.

i have all three. two of each. finish on my stag is rough and i see some brush mark i can't get rid of.. cmmg and DS appear the same as far as the finish goes. CMMG fit perfectly with two different uppers (CMMG and Stag) but the stag lower didn't fit quite well with either upper. my stag lower and upper are so tight, i have to hammer in/out the take down pin.. that's a problem especially since i gotta top load the ammo every 2 minutes at the range.. overall, CMMG was the best (although the roll mark on the front of the mag well kinda bugged a little). stag is a hit or miss 'cause i have some friends with stags that fit perfectly.. but my favorite so far are the mega's.. they're purty nice, except that ugly***** gator grip crap on the front of the mag well..

Stag has a warranty on their lowers? I didn't know we even needed a warranty. Mine shoots fine with a Rock River upper.

Warranty as in if your reciever was damaged they tend to have the attitude that they will replace it or fix it This has been posted by more than one person on forums .

Didn't someone here (or maybe it was ARFCom) wipe a Stag down with CLP or WD-40 and made it darken up and lose that ashy gray appearance to match their upper better?

CLP does help darken it up a bit. CLP also can help darken up an ashy A2 stock.

Double Star and CMMG are both the same. They're cut by LAR.

Stag is cut by CMT.

CMTs are usually very tight fitting. This is by design, and a good thing, well, unless you live in California and need to top load.

I do prefer CMT and LMT cuts over LAR cuts... Mega does make some really nice lowers, though I've seen a few where the mag well cuts from either side didn't line up perfectly, causing mags to be really tight fitting.

As for the receivers that were most desirable to me? I didn't go on price. The receivers with company markings that had rifles I wanted to build were the ones I purchased.

Well, I went against all ya' all and went with the RRA. ;) Mostly because I have an LEO friend that purchased one for duty and it is a nice rifle and performs very well. Also, I like the fact that RRA parts seem to be affordably priced. I plan on adding their 20" varmint upper and a real cheap scope (well cheap to start off with:D ).

I have decided however, (based on all of your input) that I will be purchasing an additional lower and will probably go with the CMMG.

Thanks all for your help...

I wiped my Stag down with Rem oil and it looks a lot better. No more white chalky stuff on it and it matches my upper better now.
