View Full Version : Mossberg 44US Refinished

I know this may be blasphemy to collectors but I decided to refinish my 44US that I purchased from a fellow Calgunner a few months ago. Stripped the old finish off with Klean Stripper, sanded with 150, 220 and 440 grit sandpaper (all by hand). Stained with MinWax Red Mahogany stain after treating with Minwax Pre-Stain first. This allowed the stain to be absorbed more evenly. Then using the magic I discovered on RimFireCentral.com I applied 8 coats of Tru Oil.

The secret is to appy a very thin coat of Armour All and then the Tru Oil. This allows the Tru Oil to dry in about 15 minutes. I applied four coats of this elixir on one day and let it dry overnight and another 4 coats the next day. Rubbed with 0000 steel wool inbetween coats. It really made the grain and stain come alive.

Nice job. after removing the cheeck piece (I'm LHed), I did the same thing to a M42A years ago. It looks about the same as mine. However, I'm not going to do it to my M44US. I'll leave that one alone.

Best to read through the whole thread (19 pages) and see what others have done. Some fantastic looking stocks.

I really need to do that to mine. It has the manlicher stock.
But first I need to figure out what is wrong with the safety. If I have a round chambered and the trigger is cocked but on safety, when I click the safety off, it fires.
Any ideas?
