As a dedicated rifle shooter who doesn't even own any handguns, I know that the rifle crowd tends to have a 'purist' attitude about what their local range should offer. Give most guys a bench with a paper and/or steel target a few hundred yards away and they are happy and content. I enjoy this type of shooting..... but I'd also like some variety now and then. Moving targets, shooting from some sort of practical "sets" (window ledge, doorway, car hood, etc.) or whatever other ideas someone might have for added variety.

But I'll be damned if I can find anything other than the typical bench - empty space - target type of ranges in SoCal. Does anyone know if *anyplace* in S. California offers anything beyond the typical rifle range? I'm not looking for something like that crazy machine gun shoot in Kentucky, just something (anything...) that might add a little variety to the usual paper punching.

thanks.

To get there take 8 East to the Jacumba exit. Make a left on Carrizo Gorge Road and go one mile to the "T" with Old Highway 80. Turn left on 80 and go exactly one mile, the dirt road is on the right hand side. It is less than 100 yards from the highway to the first shooting area.

Sounds like you are interested in some kind of "action" shooting. Have you checked out the Competition And Action Shooting forum here.

Go to the mojave area and set up cans or bottles on the ground. Have your friend drive a vehicle with a sun roof see how many you can hit :p

Record it, submit it to break or ebaumsworld and get $$$ :D

Check out your local IPSC or IDPA matches as well.

I've always been confused about that: if 99% of ranges are static bench shooting only, where the heck do all IPSC, IDPA, and SASS people practice?

Try helium filled balloons on a breezy day. That should add a slight challenge to your long range shooting.

Go to the Mojave area and people usually have the cars set up for you!

Exactly. I was hoping he was from Bay Area, I was going to reccomend the Chabot Tactical Rifle shoots.

I started doing them just because I got tired of regular "public line" shooting. I hardly even use the benches anymore, not really very fun.

Be careful not to walk a few hundred yards south or the Federalis may be picking you up ;)
