View Full Version : Loudest/Most Obnoxious Long Gun and Handgun You Have Ever Heard at the Range?

What's the loudest and/or most obnoxious sounding gun you have ever heard at the range? (No 20mm or machine gun fantasies please.)

For me it would have to be a .50 BMG with an "experimental" muzzle break. It was absolutely horrible. I was one the line next to the owner and shook my head "no more" after just the one shot. He complied. It wasn't at all bad without the muzzle break.

Loudest handgun I have heard would have to be a MR BFR revolver in .444 marlin.

Loudest I've ever heard is a S&W .500 Magnum revolver, or some S&W revolver with a short barrel, chambered for .454 Casull. The .500 makes a really loud and deep THUD, whereas the .454 Casull makes a really loud and sharp POP.

Those guns aren't exactly obnoxious, they're just loud. An obnoxious gun would be an AK pistol. THOSE are obnoxious.

I've had several different people tell me my Sig Pro SP2340 is the loudest gun they've ever heard. Dunno why.

lol wtf?... That's hardly considered loud. About the volume of a cap gun compared to the stuff I've heard.

My Mosin M44 with a modified brake.. LOUD and very annoying to the patrons shooting on either side...

Indoors I would say my old Spanish Star Model A 9mm Largo was impressively
loud...

Probably would be my buddy's Mosin M44. It turns heads every time he fires it at the range. I'm sure the S&W model 29 was pretty annoying to the shooters next to us, but not much beats big 30 caliber rifles, except maybe even bigger rifles.

Once you hear a .50 BMG with a brake, nothing else comes close. If you're next to one, close your mouth or you can fell the pressure in your sinus!

Loudest pistol I've heard- probably the 4" ported .500 S&W mag.

Most obnoxious? The dude that was shooting next to me once at the indoor range who was raining .22LR cases on me from a Ruger Mk2 :D

Any rifle shooting 50BMG with appropriate muzzle brake.

Outside of that, the loudest rifle I've witnessed is an Egyptian Hakim. It has a very efficient muzzle brake, and makes a Mosin Nagant sound like little more than a pea shooter.

Bonus is that the Hakim kicks like out as little as an AR (Hakim is chambered in 8mm Mauser).

There's a bunch of wimps here. I've never been around a 50BMG that I felt was obnoxious in any way and, I've worked at an indoor range which allowed 50s.

At an indoor range a desert eagle in 44mag. Something about being indoors made it suck. As far as rifle I would say a Mosin, those suckers are loud. Now in all truthfulness I was in Korea with the Army and had to cover the tanks going through their paces. A tank shooting off its main gun is the most loud obnoxious gun fire I have ever seen. The barracks would rattle over a mile away. Someone can back me up here who has been to KTC.

My muzzle-braked M44. Not so bad when I'm shooting it, but when I let someone else shoot it, I could feel the concussion from the muzzle brake bouncing off the shooting stall walls and it's much louder than when behind the gun.

Heh, not as bad as the Paladins. I was in an FA unit for 6 years. Tank cannons are 120mm...Paladins are 155mm. It was funny to be on lunch break in Iraq and hear our guys start firing, and see people get confused as to whether it was incoming or outgoing fire because the firing sounded like impacts and rattled everything.

As for a handgun/rifle...+1 on the Barrett .50 cal w/ muzzle break, and the .50 cal DE. Although a .30-06 next to you can get pretty annoying, and anyone raining shells from 4 lanes over because they're 2 feet back from where they're supposed to be in the stalls.

As for at the range, I shot a S&W 500 Magnum one time.
Never again.
It was the loudest and most obnoxious handgun I had ever fired.

My boy told me his was while he was on the "Infantry phone" I forget the term he used standing beside an M1A1 directing tank fire.

They don't use ear plugs.

After the first time he just drops the phone and dives for cover hoping he makes it before the cannon fires.

The tankers get pissed at him because he doesn't stow the phone properly.

I get a lot of looks (mostly at indoor ranges) when I break out the TC Contender with the 10" 30-30. I guess it's mostly because it's a single shot, and folks around me can't find a rhythm to the shooting.

Aside from a .50BMG my buddie's XD .40 is surprisingly crappy to shoot next to. I've definitely heard worse, but there's something about that gun that makes the sound incredibly piercing. It's just not a pleasure to shoot to the right of it, but shooting it or standing to the left isn't a big deal at all.

I have to go with the Barret 50 BMG in the long gun---the muzzle-break on that thing REALLY speaks!! When I rarely shoot at an indoor range (and when they allow me to shoot it there), my 4 3/4" FA .454 Casull with full-shout 260 grain factory ammo generally will clear out the area around me---earplugs and muffs for me!

Sorry, this shows your complete lack of knowledge of how a MB works. Of course, standing next to one would put you in harms way. The shooter should have been more responsible and had you stand dirrectly BEHIND the gun. That way, you are not dirrectly in the path of the gases, burning powder and redirrected noise.

There use to be a Indoor shooting range in Northridge, that you could shoot rifles up to 458 Win Mag.

I remember going up the stairs, and checking in. I finally made it to the lane, and the guy next to me had a 308 M1A. Damn I can still feel the concussion.

That place closed down sometime ago, But that was one of the loudest.

2nd place would go to when I was shooting 357 magnum loads out of my S&W Scandium J-Frame. For some reason (on that day), a couple of shooters came up to me asking what I was shooting.

I used to own one of those dreadful things- my head placement and head size put the back-blast from the gas system right at my harline in the center of my forehead. You could tell I'd been shooting it because of the black mark and my new 'interesting' hair style!

I'd hate to be in combat firing one without eye protection.

best decision of my life was when .50 BMG was being made legal in Kalifornia, my father and I went and registered his AR50 in both of our names so I could continue shooting it. Every single time we go to the range, we set up as far away from people as we can, and every time someone sets up next to us we tell them they may want to move a table down, they always say no, but always end up moving.

Ummm, though the loudest most obnoxious thing I've ever been next to was a Weatherby mark V? Mark IV? in 30-.378 with this ridiculous brake on the end. We were under a tarpoline cover and it wasnt THAT bad, but it was bad enough to make me wait until after the shot to try to make a clean trigger break. :)

Pistols... anything in a magnum cartridge with a 2.25 inch barrel -_-

I don't mind the big ones, they just "jump and thump" and while loud, properly protected ears can handle it.

The one gun that I found most unpleasant was one of those AMT pistols from about twenty years ago chambered in .30 carbine. It went off with a sharp, piercing crack and even with headphones on, it hurt to hear it - like a nail was being driven right through your eardrums and into your sinuses.

Being a bigbore nut, I have fired all of em in an indoor range...often on a weekly basis...never had an issue as a shooter or in the next lane over. I actually like the pressure wave of the big boomers , well that was before trying my 338 JDJ#2 in an indoor range.

Even with ear plugs and ear muffs on, it was like sitting in a 3'x3' sealed room and lighting an M80 right over your head. I would rather squeeze off 50 out of the 500 I used to have indoors than just one of those 338's indoors.

Two of the guys came from behind the gun sales area, expecting to see missing limbs and metal shards...and to be honest it was the most unpleasant squeeze of a trigger I had ever done in the 38 years I have been shooting.

Outdoors it's awesome, indoors the 10" barrel and brake are beyond obnoxious ( And I shoot my braked 45/70 16" barrel indoors with hot handloads and the 525gr Sledgehammers...piece of cake )

The offending indoor round was a 200gr 338 Nosler Accubond @2,340fps H322 powder ( Get higher velocities with the faster H322, but probably why its so bad indoors ) ....here is the 338 next to a 44 magnum with a 310gr TrueShot silver alloy bullet.

The most troublesome was a guy with a semi-auto who kept showering me with hot brass even after pointing it out to him. He decided to leave once I touched off a single 50bmg and he caught the side blast of the AR50 brake removing items off his bench. Sorry but he asked for it.

Hard to say for me seeing as I'm deaf in my right ear and partially in my left and have been since I was 5. Guns pretty much sound the same to me whether shot indoors or not. It's kind of a joke between my shooting buddies and I that I have "built in hearing protection." Anyways, I guess if I had to choose annoying sounding guns I'd have to go with either handguns or SBRs. My uncle is a Class III Dealer in another state and he has an SBR in .375 H&H Mag and that thing sounds and feels horrible to shoot. As far as handguns goes, the only annoying one I heard was a CAR pistol with them 200 round double drum mags. Listening to that thing made me wish I was totally deaf.

I had a 45 with a caspian hybrid barrel, 5 ports in the top of barrel. Shot it under a tin cover at a NRA action shoot. I warned the RO that it would spit flames out of the top and not to get alarmed. After my round he shook his head and said Damn that's loud!!

My 16" midlength with a Surefire MB556k break seems to be pretty annoying to other shooters. My brother in law's SCAR 16S has the stock PWS break and it was hard trying to spot for him, even though I knew it was coming the concussion caused me to flinch from the blast every time.

Outside of braked .50 cal's the worst, most obnoxious rifle I commonly encounter is Marlin Guide Guns. Warmish 45-70 loads with heavy bullets, mixed with the short, ported barrel makes bystander teeth rattle. My .444 with 24 inch, unported barrel shooting 265 grain handloads is pipsqueak, report wise, compared to the Guide Guns.

In handguns, ported Contenders in hot calibers are easily the most obnoxious to be around.... and the most fun to shoot. :)

There's a bunch of wimps here. I've never been around a 50BMG that I felt was obnoxious in any way and, I've worked at an indoor range which allowed 50s.

Not even when Impacto was using that special powder at Angeles. That was pretty darn loud! I guess I'm the wimp..

Those are .50 DTC blanks. The fireball is about 4 feet in diameter and scorches the concrete bench when fired in the Ferret. The overpressure sets off every car alarm in the lot. FIRE IN THE HOLE! :D

Or me..

I was an an indoor range shooting with my brother. There was a guy and his girlfriend shooting a .22 next to us. I took out my ported 6" taurus .44mag and when I shot it the girl in the lane next to us jumped so hard here ear muffs flew off of her head and landed in the nearby garbage can. It was awesome.

NoDak Spud receiver and a SAW style grip. Custom gas piston.
Not bad on recoil but the muzzle blast is... EPIC.

I have a HAKIM and it is just plain fun to shoot. You're right about the kick. Despite being chambered in 8mm Mauser, it kicks about like an AR.

It is also darn loud and that muzzle brake is cool!!!! :D

The worse one I ever seen or heard was a guy at a indoor range shooting a 45-70 derringer. He shot ir four times and quit.Too much recoil.

I usually show up at the range with a Marlin 1895 SBL in .45-70 and a Ruger .454 Casull. Yeah, I'm the loud guy who sets up at the end.

One of the loudest guns I've had that was fun to shoot at night, was my fireball producing S&W .38 with the 2" barrel. It was fun to shoot .38 +P rounds out of it, and the fireball out of the short barrel would give my .454 a run for it's money.

Probably anything with a brake on it. Though most I encounter at my range is AR's. It is amazing how quiet they are without a brake and more amazing with! I was right next to a guy shooting a 50bmg a few months back, loved the heads that turned, but was not as loud as I expected, more of a thump in the chest feeling. That does not bother me though....it is a friggen gun range.
Although I have been known to move down or warn folks with children or new shooters when I am firing my Saiga or Mosins...just out of respect.

The guys shooting the SKS's and Garands on the 25 yard range at P2k in El Cajon.

I usually just put my handgun down and leave the range until they're done with their 20 rounds or so that they shoot.

The .50 cal handgun they rent is also kinda funny. Last time a middle aged lady was shooting it. It was like one of those youtube videos in person. I also stepped out on that one.

I can count on one hand the number of times I've been to a range. I usually just go to the woods or desert to shoot. But one of the few times I have gone a guy in the lane next to me was shooting a .460 Weatherby. Every time he shot it everything on the range shook. I think it was probably the break that was on it but I got up and moved down range.

I really hate it when ranges put people with big bore guns right next to everyone else. There were maybe 3-4 people on the whole range so they could have easily put him on the end.

I've shot next to someone with a .338 Lapua running a pretty aggressive brake.. I could feel the "blast" on my face, and feel it in my chest. First time he fired it I flinched and missed my shot.. I learned very quickly to time my shots between his. I've stood behind and to the right of a .50BMG running a fairly wicked brake as well.. Definitely feel that one throughout your body.

As far as indoor.. There was a guy who came in with a single shot .223 with a 6" barrel. (might have been 8".. but I thought it was shorter than that) Everyone on that side of the range stopped shooting within 2 shots and was wanting to find out what the hell just went off.

On the complete reverse end of the spectrum, shooting my Savage Mark II BTVS with subsonic ammo at the indoor range sounds like I'm shooting a pellet rifle. :P

This. When I was a new shooter, it always surprised me at how ungodly loud ARs seemed compared to other rifles which were shooting bigger bullets. I know now it was because of their brakes, but geez - it's strange when you're inside that "cone" behind the shooter where the report is actually relatively mild (as you'd expect from such an itty-bitty cartridge :D), but once you are on the shooter's sides, it's louder than heck. When I'm shooting my own AR, it surprises me how gentle the sound and recoil are. The recoil from my Mini 14 is even gentler, but the report is, while not quite louder, just a bit different.

My AR pistol turns some heads. Last time I had it out two guys sat down next to me to sight in a new rifle. I warned them they may not want to do that. They smiled and laughed at me. They stopped smiling when the first flame ball and concussion caused them to almost fall out of their chairs the overhang over the range didnt help them at all....

Have not had my 9x25 Dillon at an indoor range yet but I have heard it will turn some heads.

Worst I have ever heard would have to have been hunting. Some idiot fired three rounds right over my head, never caught him. The thing sounded like a cannon going off - I am sure it was not that loud but when your in front of the muzzle you adrenalin makes it seem louder....
