SO I just picked up my first AR from another Calgunner, should I be concerned about these wears?? Supposedly, the bbl is CMMG 20" chrome-lined w/ 1:12 twist. Nothing on the upper except for a "keyhole" symbol, anyone has any clue? I've been reading AR15.com and found that best ammo I should use is 5.56mm M193. Any inputs for this newb is greatly appreciated. TIA

Looks used. Normal stuff. .223/5.56 @ 1:12 is an A1 barrel, so the upper and barrel could be as old as 20 years. Could be a new one, but I don't know of a shop doing 1:12 as a current run. A special order maybe...think $$$$ on that.

EDIT__----- I see an elevation wheel in your pics...Not an A1 upper. So someone may have barreled an A2 or A3 with an A1 barrel.

Seems like a lot of wear and tear. Most of my guns have a couple of thousand rounds on them and there is not that much wear. Especially the wear near the ejection port where the two surfaces mate. Well what are the details on the upper?

The carry handle is detachable and is CAA, any clue on the keyhole symbol on the upper?

not much details on the upper, except for that keyhole symbol thing, BCG looks newer, no brands though, design looks like the AR "enhanced" model

Doesn't mean anything.

Just means that the upper forged blank came from Cerro Forge.

But that has absolutely nothing to do with who actually made and machined the upper.

Nope. Looks normal and used.

If it's CMMG, the barrel will be marked. Usually on the bottom underneath the handguard.

Find the markings on the barrel and post them here. We can decipher them for you.

No it won't.

The keyhole doesn't tell you anything important at all, except it allows you to be confident that the upper was machined from a forging.

It doesn't mean anything else. In fact, it doesn't even mean that the person who machined the forging knew what they were doing, or that it's in-spec.

There should be some info on the top or bottom of the barrel, between the muzzle device and front sight gas block. There could be the manufacturer, make, model, barrel material/testing, twist rate and caliber.

Before the pics were resized i didnt see the elevation whell was on a carry Handle. It looked like it was an A2 to me.

a 20" flat top with a 1:12 twist. Its not factory. the only factory big boy I know who did this is Armalite.. but that isnt an Armalite Flat top upper

Show us a picture (a clear one) of the left side of the front post. Looking for an F or adjustment screws. Its possible CMMG built this. They are a custom shop at heart.

Correct, this is where CMMG stamps their barrels underneath the handguards in the 6 o'clock position.

Thanks for all the info guys!! I found the F on the left side of the front post. Supposedly, the quad rail and front post are both YHM, the rail does have YHM on it. As for the bbl, bad news, some one ground off a portion of the markings, all I can make out is 5.56 NATO, very shallow markings btw...It WAS at the 6 o'clock position though

Well atleast you don't have to worry about the whole 5.56 in a .223 chamber anymore lol

Haha I was reading up on the barrel twists, apparently, the best if not the only thing I can shoot that will give decent groupings at 100yds is the 5.56 55gr M193...

GROUND off? That's kinda worrisome. Makes you wonder what they're trying to hide.

Or it could be an actual military barrel and that was part of the DRMO process or something? :)

If it's definitely 1:12, yeah you want to keep to standard copper-jacketed 55gr stuff or lighter.

My bushmaster upper has that keyhole marking in the receiver

Means nothing.
