View Full Version : Best caliber

XDm .40

Scenario:

Shtf... you escape into the desert mountains and set up a camp.

1. You need good range

2. Inexpensive enough to stock but beefy enough to drop a man

3. You would maybe use it with a night vision/starlit scope

I already have an ar-15 carbine length chambered in 5.56 but I'm wondering if another caliber would be better for the scenario or if I should just work on a long distance 5.56.

This may have come up before but the scenario may be a little more specific. Thank you in advance.

Lurking in order to educate myself, but I am not a noobie (nor am I an Ayooby), but in speaking with numerous SF soldiers, my son among them, the .223/5.56 just plain su*ks for putting bad guys down. I don't want to start some debate here, but these guys have 20+ deployments between them, and I tend to listen well to what they have to say about calibers in the (very, very) real world.

There's a reason you so often see ".223/5.56" in conjunction with "varmint".

As the "boys" would say: "Nothing says hate like a .308"

I hope this helps . . .

Wow, another original SHTF thread!

In this situation, I believe this caliber is the best:

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT8zKlV9xOkUS8wMU9dACHvebHW5uXDm nv3udkFWE-gqXVZp4mo_w

Make sure you use material with a 5 millenium half-life to be sure it takes care of all the SHTF.

.243 WIN.
90gr bullet with the same muzzle velocity as a 55gr .223 but with almost 800ftlb more energy or a 55gr .243 with a muzzle velocity of over 4000f/s and over 75% of the energy of a 168gr .308. If you're worried that a .223 is insufficient but .308 is overkill, this is it. Basically a necked down 7.62 with a 6mm bullet.

It's lighter than .308 so you can carry a helluva lot more. Less recoil than a .308 so it's easier to spray and pray. Flatter trajectory than a .223 with more reach and better ballistics. Ammo can be found at almost any place that sells guns, even in foreign countries. Can readily be found in 55gr to 100gr bullets with specialty 115gr available. Cheaper than any other intermediate calibers such as 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC. And they make AR's chambered in .243 Win for instant mag drop capabilities and modularity.

.223 cause you would also consider weight, and it meets your other requirements (though "good range" is rather subjective). Its also fairly inexpensive and easily available.

3. You would maybe use it with a night vision/starlit scope

Extremely unlikely, but maybe you would buy one.

I honestly think it has to due with the ranges of engagement and the bullet used in M855 more than anything a 5.56x45 will drop someone if it doesn't then a 45 acp would just tickle. I've heard the military has an improved version of M855 I just don't know what it is of the top of my head or care to look right now its late.

What YOU need is a 22lr bolt gun, and a few thousand rounds of ammo.

No, not to protect yourself: to practice.

Well aside from that trash I think ill go with the .243 since the numbers make sense. Thanks UserM4 and a couple others for real info. After reading some of these other responses I can see why California doesn't deserve gun rights, our average IQ must be too low. Good luck with that Dodge though!

You're asking a silly question, so you're going to get a silly answer. Sorry, but it is. There is no "Best" caliber. Ask for an opinion on "Best" and you're going to get 1,000 different opinions one everything from .22lr to .50bmg.

Also, have fun stocking .243. That stuff ain't cheap compared to 5.56 or 7.62 NATO.

Personally, in a fantasy SHTF situation I'll be carrying 7.62x39.

Since the topic is popular enough, I'm agreeable with this so no more new SHTF threads are created.

Any of you SHTF'ers want to compile a thread with a good portion of the info given so far?

The real question is are you in good enough shape for the SHTF? Because if you can't run a mile in under 8 minutes, the zombies will catch you. That 'desert mountain' elevation won't help either. I heard Tapco is coming out with a tactical treadmill. Maybe look into that. ;)

I started with a .223 and decided on a 308 as well to drop real "game." Friend in service also said overseas they are at times using .308 as it penetrates the "mud huts" much better than the .223 round.

Are you runnin' from something?

Blah blah blah. The 5.56mm round is not a long range round, it was never promised to be a long range round, it wasn't sold as a long range round, and it isn't a long range round. The 5.56mm isn't powerful enough blah blah blah. So many peole say that, yet I cannot find anyone who is manly enough to hold my paper while I shoot my AR15. I think Emil Matasaraneu and Larry Phillips Jr would disagree... you know if they had air in their lungs. It is extremely inneffictive, that must be why it is the #1 Law Enforcement and Military rifle round in the Western world, because it is so inneffective. What do 90% of the greatest/most successful rifles from the second half of the 20th century and the 21st century have in common, the 5.56mm.

The grass is always greener on the other side. Its ironic really. During the Falklands the Argentines and the Brits couldn't stop stealing eachothers FALs. American troops overseas want to go on patrol with AKs while Al Queda/Hezhollah is filming themselves shooting captured US military weapons.

If you need a .308 get a .308. The mission drives the gear. You gonna be doing a lot of moving, lighter weight is the way to go. Using vehicles, maybe something compact. Need ammo? Your not a camel, you cannot carry your box of 10,000 rounds of ammo with you everywhere you go. The larger the round the less you can carry and the heavier it will be. Your going to take shots out past 500 yards? Think about this, are you even equipped to? Your Aimpoint/EO Tech might cut it if your one hell of a good shot. Are you even good enough? I'll be honest, I'll need a bipod/rest, extremely flat/solid surface and a few spare rounds if I am going out past 500 yards.

There is not one answer to every problem.

I would be hoping to god it was either:
a .308 for drop it in its tracks power, accuracy and range
or
.223 for its effectiveness on a man sized target, lightweight, and lightweight ammo.

Somebody didnt get their dessert :) But you guys are too funny..

But to the OP, if youre serious about your Silly Hypothetical Tacticool Fantasy, a 7.62x39 AK or 5.56 AR really is your best bet. If you need something with a bit more punch and range, something chambered in 308 will do you well. Whatever it is you pick, stock up on ammo/mags, and practice, practice, practice..
