Use the search feature, this has been discussed to death.

Summary:

It's debatable/subjective so you're not going to get a right answer but you will be okay with both.

Hi-point 995...

AR15, easy to disassemble and carry, many calibers to choose from, easy to fix, easy to shoot, lighter, more rail space for the weight, more retailers selling gear, accurate, finding repair parts will be easier since more LEO use AR15s than AK47s...at least in this country they do, cheaper to train with using a common .22lr conversion bolt.

Then, learn all you can from this video:

Then take two Prevacid, 1 Cialis, and 3 Viagra. Call John Mccain in 4 hours if you-know-what still exists, he'll know what to do.

While you will definitely benefit from seeing other threads containing this topic, you will have to decide for yourself what SHTF means. Short term, long term, or forever? Are you leaving, or holing up? Living in an urban area/community/rural region? House or tent? Hunting or eating Spam?

Each variable will influence your final decision. Consider building up a small armory to suit your perceived need. It probably ain't ever gonna happen anyway, so have fun buying.

Cheers,

I can honestly say in a SHTF scenario a Lever Gun is a very viable option.

My brother has had bad luck..... he had to leave his almost brand new Marlin 30-30 with the P2K Range gunsmith because the cocking lever became jamed in the DOWN possition, with rounds still in the rifle. The gunsmith there said that he had to disassemble the rifle, and that he had never seen one do that before... Winchester or Marlin.

Nicely said, except you forgot slugs to reach out and accurately hit threats out to 100 yds or more. A good 12 gauge is definitely a must for any true survival situation, pump action is my choice of comfort and familiarity.

No need to hit the zombies over the head with the guitar...the right combination of guitar and amp should do the trick.....for example...I love tele's and strat's but single coils do not have enough balls to take out zombies...for SHTF....I would have to go with a vintage les paul (58 or 59).....straight into a Orange Thunderverb 200 (on 11).....takes zombies out NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!!:D

AK because I have seen my AR jam when I did not clean it once. My WASR has gone 3 range visits, 500 rounds, and no jams or anything. I love my DDM4 but IT IS NOT my go to rifle in the event of a SHTF scenario. The AR is definitely more accurate out to longer distances but I will take the 7.62x39 round every day of the week to make up for the lack of accuracy (my WASR is as accurate as my AR but at 300+ yrds I concede it to the AR over the AK).

Although you have to keep them a lot cleaner than an AK, I will be using my AR since I will actually hit what I am aiming at.

OK. Here comes the flying poo.:D

Being smart and or prepared is better than any particular gun.

their silence speaks volumes

The AK crowd doesn't need a poll to feel good about there rifle, the AR people on the other hand...

Yeah...I just need to go to my range and bring out the WAS-AR (my WASR shoots like an AR) and the oogling starts. I don't ever look at ARs at the range as much as I will see someone with an AK pattern to check it out. Lots of ARs at my range that is for sure...

I won't hate...I like my AR but I just prefer my WASR...If I could lug my PSL around for long distances (I walked a few miles with it in NW and it was pain) I would make that my first choice but length and weight kills that.

LOL:D Yeah I know what I'll be hitting when I use my AK...Not sure if that poster knows how to handle an AK pattern.

wow a Daniel Defense M4 isn't reliable... my home built hasn't been cleaned in over 500 rounds and I know it will not jam.

I guess that means DD is crap gear... bottom tier huh... not as good as; Stag, Bushmaster, RRA.

I guess that means DD = Hesse, Vulcan, Blackthorne... This is what you are saying.
LOL

I would not say it is bottom rung but it needs to run wet that is for sure. I go to the range and I see all these pristine ARs that are shiny with CLP or whatever lube they have. I also have gone over 200+ rounds without fail with the DD as well...However, it will get the occasional jam...Don't deny it just accept it. I see enough ARs at my range jam. If you deny that then you lying to yourself. There are enough tests on the M4 stoppage rate one which is a military test.

***See well know story below***
X=the fact that one AR was the champ of the litter and one was runt. However we will just spread the number evenly among the guns.

If you do the math each gun (10) M4 essentially got 6000 rounds so the M4 got to shoot over 60000 rounds from 10 different M4s...There were a total of 866 stoppages which would be 866/10 (amount of M4)=86...That equals one stoppage every 69.76 rounds or 6000/86=69.76 or 60000/866=69.xx. You can keep that rate and your AR brother. I will keep my AK pattern...In the end, I will carry both. Bottom line...There are more ARs than AKs here and I would assume if I needed ammo then the AR will win that argument.

In the fall 2007, the Army tested the M4 against three other carbines in "sandstorm conditions" at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland: the Heckler & Koch XM8 rifle, Fabrique Nationale de Herstal SOF Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR) and the Heckler & Koch HK416. Ten of each type of rifle were used to fire 6,000 rounds each, for a total of 60,000 rounds per rifle type.[13] The M4 suffered far more stoppages than its competitors: 882 stoppages, 19 requiring an armorer to fix. The XM8 had the fewest stoppages, 116 minor stoppages and 11 major ones, followed by the FN SCAR with 226 stoppages and the HK416 with 233.

Eh. keep in mind that's in "sandstorm" conditions. Even in Kuwait and Iraq Afghanistan conditions aren't usually THAT bad (though sometimes). There are a lot of concerns that a large armed forces branch needs to take into concern than an individual planning for the zombie apocalypse doesn't have (and vice versa with the budget and support staff, etc). Military wise, something like the HK-416 uppers seems like the best intermediary solution, but for the zombie apocalypse, I'll be happy with my ACR (once I can get a spare bolt, barrel/gas system, and firing pin for it anyway :26: ).

I have never been an AK guy. I am going to buy my first Saiga pretty soon. I might even get two. One .223 and one 7.62x39. I hope I won't be disappointed.

Let's hope there never is a SHTF scenario...
