Making 10round 30 mags

Ok After reading Bills thread on the legality of a 10 round 30 magazine and the potential for reversability of the C-products mag(and not being able to find one), I thought about making one.What I wanted to know is would it be legal to buy all the parts to assemble a 30 round mag(like a bushmaster mag) and then assemble it with with a metal insert welded inside to limit it to ten rounds and then weld the floorplate in place. I like the look of the extended mag in a fixed mag configuration but I don't want to dissassemble a 30 round mag and ruin it and I don't want to get in any trouble.

I do sell them and no they are not reversable in a back and forth fashion. I am sure if you were clever enough and did enough metal work, you might be able to make them go back to 30 rounds. However, you can do that with most any magazine and that is on the end user. You cannot take a C Products mag and simply bend the tabs back and forth. I tried it with no luck.

I am currently out of stock on them and should have some in this week or the next. I would just recommend waiting until I get them back in stock and doing that.

As far as a home made modification goes, how is your insert going to get past the spring or the spring past the insert?

I am not trying to be an arse about this, I just want you to think it through. I am all for the do it yourselfers doing things themselves. There are plenty of people who want to buy these CA legal items that the DIYer is not going to break business.

And remember as Bill cautioned, if you are going to DIY then you need to make darn sure that baby won't take more than 10 and it isn't going to be reversable.

Wes I don't think you're being an "arse". No I haven't thought it all the way through. I was just wondering about the legality of ordering the parts and figuring out a way to make them myself(i'm like that:D ). I will still order one from you when you get them back in stock, as that is the easier path. thanks

I think you would have to weld the floorplate to the mag-body after you put the block in. I don't see why it would be illegal, but I'm not a lawyer so what do I know.

Just putting in a block and welding it should be ok as long as long as the welds are good. The only problem would be your spring. I would be hesistant to mess with cutting down the spring as it might cause feed issues. And once you get that baby welded, then there should be no turning back.

well couldn't you just use a standard 10 round spring and follower in a 30 round mag body and weld the floorplate in place? That would seem to solve the spring tension issue.

I don't know. It may not have the capacity to accept more than 10 .223 rounds, but, it may be capable of accepting more than 10 rounds of .22lr. ;)

What I did with mine was measure the mag body where the rear lip of the follower was with 10 rounds. I then drilled a hole right underneat that mark (on the backside of the mag, where you have a double layer of metal), and pressed in a roll pin that was long enought to stop the rear lip of the follower, but not long enough to interfere with the spring. Then I welded over the roll pin/hole. Works like a champ. How legal is it? Legal enough for me :)
