got a bonus today, i have about $500 and i want to get a semi-automatic rifle. So far i have it narrowed down to the $399 saiga at riflegear and a WASR. Any other suggestions? should i just get an AR lower and save for un upper?

Anyone know anything about the Saiga's? would i be better off with a WASR?

If you get a WASR, make sure your front sight post is straight, BEFORE YOU BUY IT. Then, you can pick up a nice KVAR furniture set for a little over $100, that way, the termites won't eat your rifle:)

Check out the HiPoint Carbine in 9mm. Accurate out to about 200yards. Very good knockdown power out of carbine barrel. Ammo is cheap and plentiful.

SAIGA ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This.

Let's reword your question....

So far i have it narrowed down to the $399 saiga, built in the Izmash factory that built every other AK on the planet, and a WASR, made at Century from a parts kit by shaved monkeys;) :D

Seriously... 5 drunken Calgunners and $500 in Harbor Freight tools can build a better AK than Century.

Yeah it is.

But seriously to answer your question go with the Saiga. Later you can convert it and have a legit Russian made AK type rifle.

Good choice. They should all be Legion, but just in case you want check for the ones with dimples =D. They tend to have the pistol grip hole already cut under the plate and may (rarely) have threaded barrels under that shroud.
