Well, really, no more than 2,147,483,647, or 2^31 − 1.

Wouldn't want to crash the gunstores computer systems after all..

As others have said more humorously, there is no statutory limit.

As many as you want. The only problem is that eventually you may come up against an issue of being "in the business of selling firearms" which requires you to acquire an FFL. For example, if you constantly buying and selling guns and not holding on to them. But if you are dissolving a lifelong collection or something like that there is no limit.

12070. (a) No person shall sell, lease, or transfer firearms unless he or she has been issued a license pursuant to Section 12071. Any person violating this section is guilty of a misdemeanor.

(b) Subdivision (a) does not include any of the following:
(4) The infrequent sale, lease, or transfer of firearms.

(c)(1) As used in this section, "infrequent" means:
(B) For firearms other than pistols, revolvers, or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person, occasional and without regularity.

Long gun acquisition should be tempered only by the knowledge that the maximum number of firearms that you can wield effectively and accurately by hand is ONE.

Oooh so that's why there's a handgun limit, to prevent people from committing a crime with two guns instead of one.....
