50 cal rifles are fine. It's specifically rifles chambered in .50 BMG that are illegal. Meaning that a 50 BMG non-rifle long-gun (think M2) is legal, or a 50 cal black powder rifle, or a different chambering with the same diameter.

Or you can go with a similar round, such as Serbu's .50 DTC.

.510 DTC is the work around. It's neatly identical to the banned .50 BMG

I'm thinking an Ackley Improved version of the .50 BMG would be pretty cool.

An Ackley Improved version would be illegal because a standard .50BMG round could be fired in an AI chamber.

A standard .50BMG round will not fit in a DTC chamber
Why do people always want to re-invent the wheel coming up with wildcats when there is already a standardized cartridge available, the .510DTC. At least it was standardized when it was initially made as the .510 DTC EUROP (CIP spec, european version of SAAMI), but then a blueprint sent to one of the reamer companies had an error on it, and some rifles were made with an out-of-spec chamber. Instead of fixing those rifles, EDMarms decided to wildcat the .510DTC EUROP into the .50DTC-EDM.

I did not know that, learn something new every day.

I still dont understand that I thought that anything larger then .50 was considered a Weapon of mass destruction or something. Technically isn't .510, .010 larger then .50??? I have a feeling I'm off here but that's how I understood it.

a .50BMG bullet is .510". The barrel is .500" at the lands, and .510" at the grooves. The 510DTC uses the same bullet and the same barrel as the .50BMG, but with a different chamber.

the .500" land diameter means that it isn't a DD.

On a side note, what is the barrel life for a .50 DTC?

On a side note, what is the barrel life for a .50 DTC?

Generally speaking for bolt guns, about 3000 rounds before accuracy may begin to degrade... same as for BMG chambers.

Or you can go with a similar round, such as Serbu's .50 DTC.

I think Eric Dannis would have a little problem with the idea that Serbu or anyone in the states came up with the .510DTC cartridge. Also, there are at least 3 different DTC chamberings that I know of. Eric's original .510 DTC (now called DTC-Euro here), .510 DTC-EDM and the .510 DTC chamber cut with a JGS reamer. Each one is a little different.

All I know is barrets in 50 BMG are not

There are many legally owned Barretts in 50BMG in this state. So, please don't go telling people that they are illegal. Blanket statements like that only help feed the anti's hype. Instead, say that "California has more 50BMG rifles than any other state, none has ever been used in a crime but, California has made it illegal to import anymore into the state or even transfer the ones that are already here."
