Sac Valley Shooting Center - April 9th (Saturday) - 200, 300, and 600 yard match

Standing - 2 sighters and 20 record shots at 200 yards in 22 minutes.
Sitting rapid fire - 2 sighters in 2 minutes, then 10 shots in 60 seconds with a required mag change. Then another 10 shots in 60 seconds, all at 200 yards.
Prone radid fire - 2 sighters in 2 minutes, then 10 shots in 70 seconds with a required mag change. Then another 10 shots in 70 seconds, all at 300 yards.
Prone slow fire - 2 sighters and 20 record shots at 600 yards in 22 minutes.

Many of us will be shooting AR Service Rifles (think Vietnam M16 configuration).

The good news is that anyone who is interested may shoot the entire match prone with a bipod, rear rest, and scope. With this setup, it will be a VERY easy match. All types of equipment are allowed (bipods, scopes, irons, rear bags), and will be classed accordingly for awards. Match fee - $20.

If interested, simply show up at Culbertson Cove (the building/camping area below the 1000 yard line) between 7:00-7:30 am. O'Connell will be doing squadding right there. It is a semi-informal match, with a chance to learn a lot about the range. Just show up with a 100 or 200 yard zero. There will be plenty of help with comeups from there. We typically have a BBQ immediately after the match. Hamburger or hotdog and chips and drink for $2.

This should be another easy opportunity for the tacticool shooters to fire a clean score - 600-60X, or not.

Lane

P.S. - can we get "tacticool" added to the Calguns spell check dictionary? It is a very descriptive and useful term.

Yes, Project Appleseed does 25 meter events at the Sac Valley Range every month. This is three position shooting (prone, seated/kneeling, offhand) that uses a sling.

Here is a list of the California events that are scheduled for the next few months: http://appleseedusa.org/search-states.php?filter=CA&statename=California

Just about any ammo will do for the shorter ranges. What caliber?

600 is short range, kinda.

.223 is what I thought we were talking about....

I've shot manhole covers @ 500 but not paper @ 600....w/ .223 that is.

This looks great! I plan to be there, and am definitely looking forward to shooting in my first match.

I've been shooting for a number of years now, but haven't done a match or any classes other than a basic handgun safety class. I'll be shooting an A2 style AR. Any tips beyond the obvious basics? Would it be best to get a bipod and/or sling between now and then, or simply sandbag it like usual? I've shot at SVC numerous times including out to 200 yards with this AR.

Thanks!

If you use Iron sights, you'll want to be shooting with a sling. If you're using a scope you can use a bipod and rear bag.
There are two classes the ARs shoot in. Service Rifle and F/TR (well, there's Match rifle but that's a different thread :D)

There is another match the following day, the 10th, where the whole match is shot at 600yds.
20 shots in 20 minutes. Done three times for a total of 66 rounds (includes two "sighter" shots prior to the 20 "record" shots.

This match is one week from today....

Probably the "easiest" way to try a match. Shooting 200, 300 and then 600 yards. You'll be back for more, we're sure.

Anybody know how long this match will likely take? I'm definitely going, but don't know what I should plan for the afternoon, etc. Thanks! I'm really looking forward to this.

Truth in advertising! I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped teach me the ropes on Saturday. I had a great time, learned an incredible amount, and got bit by the bug to do a little more of this. As long as the calendar and wallet can keep up I'll be back for more...and more...and more!

I'm such a newb I didn't even know I was supposed to bring donuts :o, but all was well and I'll make sure to have a fresh box at the very least next time. I'll post in future threads about this event too so if any other first timers are curious I'll can give them my perspective.

This was an excellent introduction to competitive shooting without feeling like I was under the gun. Everyone I talked to was incredibly helpful and friendly. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! :)

When will the next one be?
I tried to make it last Saturday but couldn't. If this is a regular event then I can't wait for the next one.
