Howdy all,
An aquintance of mine wants to sell me some of his stuff. Three weapons in his collection are registered CA assault weapons. Does he need to present anything when he ships the rifles out of state to my FFL here? Would he need to send his registration papers along with the weapons?
I'm in CO, so I don't need any special paperwork to have the weapons transferred to me. I just want him to stay legal back in commie land. :D

Any registered AW must ship thru Authorized AW dealer in CA. This includes shipping to manufacture for repair/warranty work/gunsmithing.
Mu guess is your friend in CA have to find a AW dealer and the dealer may send it to you.
But I am not 100% sure.
Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply.
No kidding? Even if he's selling it? Well, on one hand that's good, because he was nervous about going to UPS with guns.
So, does anyone know an AW dealer in SF Bay Area?

He could also drive it to a neighboring state (OR, NV, AZ) and ship it from there no questions asked.

If it is a Category III ("by features") AW and is registered, sufficient number of evil features can be removed until the rifle is not an AW. At that point it can be shipped out of state like a normal rifle.
The receipient of course still has to be an FFL, but that's the case in any gun shipment (except for special case shipping to yourself).
The owner should then contact the DOJ's AW Reg & Permits unit and execute a 'no longer in possession'/deregistration.
Why someone wants to sell his reg'd AWs I dunno. Is the guy gonna stay in CA?
If he needs the cash, strip down the guns and sell the parts and keep the receivers.

If for some reason the rifle was intercepted before it crossed the state line and the numbers were run, wouldn't the rifle still come up as a registered assult weapon regaurdless of removed features?

Thank you, bweise. The guy needs the money. On top of that, his guns have been collecting dust for the last four years, because he lost all interest in shooting. He originally bought the guns shortly before the ban, mostly because he had the funds and another friend of his was doing the same.
As for the "'no longer in possession'/deregistration", is this a form that can be obtained on their website, or he'd need to call DOJ?
Treelogger, I'm just calling it as I see it. It is not my intent to hurt anyone's feelings, but I'm not going pretend that things are not what they are. Denying the fact that a large part of CA is run by a bunch of left-wing, anti-American political whores, is like saying the DPRK is actually a Democratic People's Republic.
I'm not going to proclaim that all gun owners should move. I lived in CA for 17 years and realize that there're plenty other things that determine where you live.

Damn, he should sell his blood or an organ or something...

You can go to the DOJ Firearms Division website under 'forms' and find it:

Trust me: If there was a place that had the natural beauty, the nice people, the cultural richness, and the professional opportunities that are available here, we would be out of here rather quickly.
So would everyone else :D

So would everyone else :D
Let's hope not.:)
So, I called DOJ and they confirmed what you guys said about going through an AW dealer. I asked them for a list of dealers in Bay Area and they gave me High Bridge in SF. I called High Bridge and they told me that they didn't renew they AW license and wouldn't be able to handle the transaction. :( So, any of you gents know of a dealer with current reg.?
This is becoming rather frustrating.

What kinda guns are these? Are they specifically banned by exact make & model? Let me know and perhaps we can figure things further...
Two of my reg'd ARs are actually Cat III AWs since they didn't make it on the Kasler list. I'd bet quite a few AKs are that way too.
There are 5-6 other AW permittees around the greater bay area. Trader's was one of them, but their FFL is dead now.
The DOJ will not give you a complete list of AW dealers. But if you call the DOJ permit unit and tell them the problem nicely they will tell you a few others in the area.
Dimly remembering - there may be a guy up in Fairfield area and there *may* be one in Pacifica (no, it's not CityArms).
Plan B is for your guy to arrange the transfer at a Reno FFL and just drive 'em up there.
I still think he's CRAZY ;(

A couple of AKs. None are on the Kasler list, IRRC, because he bought all these weapons in '98-'99.

If you have current info on their status and phone #s, I'd highly appreciate it.

That's a possibility, but we'd like to get this done in a less involved manner. Driving a few minutes to an AW dealer beats the hell out of driving several hours to another state.

I don't understand it either, but the guy wants to get rid of his guns, fully knowing that he'll never be able to replace them. Better I take them off his hands then they end up being destroyed.

I have no infol on AW permittees.
A couple of AKs. None are on the Kasler list, IRRC, because he bought all these weapons in '98-'99.
Kasler decision came out in Aug of 2000, with the main Kasler list issued in Octoberish 2000 and I think the official (slightly refined) version made it into CCR 979.11 soon after.
These AK's make & model combinations could indeed be on the Kasler list. There is a good chance they are not, however, as DOJ Firearms Division did a very sloppy job of formulating the Kasler list - it seems secretarial folks, not gun-aware folks did that job.
Please let me know the exact make and models of the AKs.
Please get all text on the receivers and/or pictures of receivers.
Also, what does the guy's registration papers say?
If these guns are truly not on the Kasler list, the pistol grip/flash hider/folder stock can be removed and shipped separately and the stripped rifle can be sent directly to your FFL.

Bill, thanks for your help. I don't have all that info at the moment. The guy hasn't taken pictures yet and all I don't know exact model numbers or receiver markings. Would it be alright if I PMed you with this info after I get it?

Yup, you betcha.
As a first step get ALL writing anywhere on the receivers.

Trempel: just have him strip his guns and keep the receivers (they are only worth $50-100 each) each anyways.... and you can just go buy new stripped receivers ($80-100) each, brand new.... THEN he can still keep those "reg'ed AW"... and then everything else can be legally sent via... UPS or any carrier.... and he doesn't have to pay BIG BUCKs for a AW FFL to ship the items for him... and you don't need a FFL to receive those items for you! Win-win situation!
