Hello,

I have a legal question. . . I do not have a C&R license. Is it possible for me to purchase an old 1911 through a California FFL from an out-of-state seller?

I thought it would be very cool someday to own a Sistema or an old old 1911. And it seems supplies are lower than they used to be on the affordable type. . . particularly the sistemas. I've never looked into it before because I assumed it was no legal way for me to get my hands on one.

Even if you had a C&R license, California law prevents it from being shipped directly to you; so either way it doesn't help in this situation and I am pretty sure that the 'safe' handgun list doesn't apply to C&R handguns. So assuming the particular pistol you are looking at is 50 years old or older than there should be no problem having someone out of state send it to a California FFL and you DROSing it just like any other pistol.

Of course I could be wrong, but I am about 95% certain on this.

Yes, if a handgun is at least 50 years old then it qualifies as C&R and thus is exempt from California's "safe handgun" roster requirements.

There are even a few 1911 pistols listed by name as C&R that aren't yet 50 years old.
