Yeah...I had a good morning at the range!

I was shooting my new CMP Springfield Armory M1 Garand Special this morning with my new reloads. I finally settled on this recipe of 150 grain Sierra MatchKings, 48.5 gr of IMR-4064, Remington brass and CCI Large Rifle Primers. I chronographed these cartridges at about 2696 FPS (similar to the muzzle velocity of the American Eagle/Federal .30-06 "for M1 Garand use" ammo which averages at about 2700+ FPS)

This was done this morning on a bench rest, slow fire and were all shot on the standard iron sights. I can't believe how accurate this rifle is with my handloads. I shot about 40+ rounds on this target at 100 yards.

Nice rifle and great shooting.

That one shot way off to the side made me think of a scene from Super Troopers lol.

Nice shooting! Btw, did you install the sling in purpose that way? (normally, the metal should be in the outside).

Metal to the outside is "Parade Sling" configuration. Metal to the inside is Match (Competition) configuration. And then there are two different configurations of that. Keepers together below the frog (Marine) and keepers apart, one above and one below the frog. (I don't know the name of that one as I don't use it.

Not knocking you or your rifle but that is average groups for surplus HXP at 100yds I would think with good handloads groups would shrink. Whats a 8 rd group get you?
Have you done the tilt test yet to check for the Op Rod rubbing on the stock?

this is the o.p.

well, here is an 8 shot group i made a few weeks ago with the Federal/American Eagle .30-06 "for M1 Garand use" ammo

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v103/marbles71/IMG_1275.jpg

and then here is a picture with my reloads of about 40+ rounds

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v103/marbles71/IMG_1339.jpg

i think at best, the group made with reloads got maybe fractions of an inch smaller than factory ammo. if anything, i think i made a pretty decent replica of the factory ammo, at least in terms of muzzle velocity.

as for strapping on the sling that way, there really was no purpose in it, i think i just made the mistake of not putting the frogs on the outside of the rifle. i probably ended up marring the finish of my rifle stock since i put the sling upside down...heh. :o

anyways...the Garand kicks butt

Thanks for the load data. I'm running out of HXP and need to start reloading my 06. Looks like you did all the hard work for us. Thank you.

Hornet RN,

When you shot that target, did you 6o'clock hold it, or did you put the blade in the middle of the circle?

Hornet RN,

When you shot that target, did you 6o'clock hold it, or did you put the blade in the middle of the circle?

i sighted the rifle so that i should shoot with a 6 o'clock hold on it. i basically make a "lollipop" with my sight picture by placing the black circle on top of the front sight post.

i prefer sighting in that way so that i could see the entire target. i do the same when i shoot AR-15s with iron sights too.

(i think i shoot tighter groups with my iron sighted Garand than i do with an iron sighted AR-15)

Although being a Marine, I do believe I got a little lucky on that one, it was a great day, perfect weather. I did wait about 9 months i think back in 09.. how long did you wait?

9 months? wow...mine came in just over 2 months. i placed the order in 12/19/2010 and then received in 2/7/11.

but, i bought the "special grade" garand meaning, it was built with refurbished parts, and nothing except the receiver was original. so they had plenty of them in stock...so i didn't have to wait long to get it in the mail. but because it was essentially a new rifle, i don't think my garand has as much collector's value as your does.

I hope my [future]Service Grade will shoot like that. I believe that should be the best compromise between price and condition.
