Hi guys. I have a CMP Service Grade that I got about 4 years ago. I was thinking about sending it out to Ted Brown in Jacksonville Oregon to have a .308 barrel installed. I think I would shoot it more if it shot .308. What is your opinion? Would I be crazy to butcher it? It is a mixmaster, post war. Receiver made in mid 1950's.

Thanks for your imput.

Go ahead, it 308 suits you better then its worth the effort.

my take on the matter is the CMP garand is still a service weapon and should be kept as a part of history. If you want a .308 get an M1a

but its your rifle and a tanker garand would be a decent shooter

Another option is to buy another one from CMP (rack grade)and have it re-barreled in .308.

I know someone with a .308 target-barreled Garand... he wants to get rid of it, but says it shoots great.

Don't ruin that SG garand. get a rack grade for cheap with a shot out barrel and then get a .308 installed on it.

There's nothing wrong with converting it to .308. It's a mixmaster so collectability value isn't high.

I'd say EITHER shoot the snot outta the thing AND THEN rebarrel it to .308 or do as the others have said and get a Rack Grade and go that route; why pull off a perfectly good barrel unless ya' have to.

30-06 aint that much when ya' order it through the CMP.

But hey I've got one in .308 and absolutly friggin' love it. If you go the full profile and not have to monkey with a shorter tanker-versionized bastard then all other parts will work with the .308 too; no shortened op-rods, no cut down handguards, etc. FWIW~ stick to full length/full profile barrel in whatever route you go.

+1 on not going tanker! I had this done some years ago and ended hating the gun. Stay with the full length.

Everything I've read or heard directly from peeps when I was considering getting tanker came down to a 50-50; ya' either end up with an A+ winner of verrrrry dismal F beastie that people cant seem to dump fast enough...... never any guns in between; just awsome or crap. I personally dont like them odds. YMMV
