View Full Version : Armor plate in the Bay Area?
Is there anywhere in the Bay Area that sells armor plate? I'm looking to make a few targets and my normal steel supplier isn't coming up with jack.

What kinda of rounds? Rifle, pistol? Thick enough steel should be easy to get locally. I would think armor plating would be very pricy and a little over kill.

Yea but I want it to last alittle bit too. I work in a welding shop and can get mild steel delivered in a heart beat, but at the last shoot we shot at a 3/4" piece of scrap and just a short shooting session did a number on it. If I spend alot of time making something neat, and we kill it in an hour and I'm out a couple hundred bucks in material it's not going to happen that often. Here's a pic of the plate we blasted last time.

For some reason my edit button isn't working, but those are mostly 223 and 308 arounds and some 8mm mauser. The big 'uns are 50BMG :D

3/4" scrap vs .50 BMG?
Huh, according to the anti-gunners, .50 BMG will go through "two inches of raw steel!!!!1!one"

Maybe you can buy basic shapes and modify to fit your need.

Yep, 3/4" chunk of scrap steel I had sitting ontop of my desk as a huge paperweight. I don't know how far away we were shooting at it from, probably 60 yards give or take 10 yards. The rounds weren't AP either. But still, the 50 didn't poke through.

But Jerry Brown's commercial says a .50 BMG will go through two police cars AND all the kevlar vests and trauma plates the police behind those two cars have on.

Were you ever able to pull the bullet out? If I remember correctly you could wiggle it.

You should see what my AR does to a 1/2 in steel plate at 300 yards. Its harder on it than my .30 cal because of the penitrators.
Shoot, just weld up thos holes and shoot it some more. If the .50 didn't fold your plate in half your in business.

Have you tried ALCO in Hayward?

Sims metals on Monterey highway has a large selection of steel. I have purchased a ton of stuff from them... tubing for roll cages, barstock for target stands, and plate for shooting at. All of the plate Ive ever got from them was in the scrap area, but have browsed their plate inventory while waiting to pay for my bill. IIRC, they had up to 1" ar500.

400bn should be pleanty hard enough for rifle rounds.. our silhoutte animals are 400bn and the paint doesn't even get scratches @200yds with M2ball or M80 ammo....500bn is military plate
I don't know about this site, but the seem to have a lot of stuff... I lost the site where our range gets its 400bn plate.....

is there an easy way to resurface that plate as I still have it in my garage?

Probably could, but it's just mild steel so all that'll happen all over again. Armor plate would be cool.

My brother works for a company that moves heavy equipment. He talks to job site mechanics and comes up with worn out scraper/dozer cutting blades. Usually about 6" or 8" wide by 3' to 6' long and about 3/4" to 1" thick. Have yet to find anything that will even almost penetrate, but they ring REALLY nice! Long story short, find a heavy equipment repair place and see if you can hit up the scrap pile.
