My two options are Lytle Creek and West End Gun Club. I would like to hear opinions about these two places as I have never been to either of them. I'm interested in what kind of atmosphere each has and what some of the rules are. (do they allow rapid fire, just how oll friendly are they really, etc.)
If someone could explain to me what I have heard in the past about the road to lytle creek turning into "gangster alley," that would be helpful.
We are heading out to breakfast and then to the range; any info you have will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for that little tidbit.
Ended up going to Lytle Creek and it was a fun day.. got to shoot my inherited .22lr (with a 17rnd tube mag, muhaha) for the first time.. my oll, and my m91/30 for the first time (loved that thing, too bad i only had 20rnds.)
Only put 200rnds through the .22 because it kept short stroking and getting jammed up. (No more Fed. 38grn bulk ammo for me)
EDIT:: forgot to mention that someone showed up near us with an sks with 30rd mags. i was thinking "good one buddy." the RO beat anyone to it and told him he better put his fixed 10rd back in before any LE show up to shoot.
Rapid firing some XM193, fuuuuuuun! Can't wait to go back!

Yup, thats a big no no @ lytle creek. Sks with detach mag...unless it was registered of course. LE's probably wouldn't care about the Offlist rifles.:D

If it was a AK type detachable mag then it's banned, but they also used to sell 30 round fixed magazines that basically replaced the 10 round fixed mag.

I thought it was illegal to have a fixed magazine that could hold more than 10 rounds.

Fixed mag over 10 rounds (excluding tube mags on rimfires and lever guns) is an instant AW.
You'd have more luck with an SKS copy (any non-Russian SKS-type that doesn't have SKS stamped into the reciever as the model) with the 30-round pre-ban detachable mag.

Wow, didn't know that. I knew they banned the detachable magazined SKS rifles, but had no idea the fixed high cap mags were also banned.....I thought all the high cap magazines were grandfathered and thought those were in that catagory as well.
But.....by that same train of thought, why can you use high cap magazines on an M1A (current Ca. legal ones), assuming you owned the mags before the ban?? Or can you??

If you owned a fullcap mag prior to 2000 and lived in CA at the time, you could go out today and buy a new in the box M1A and use those "preban" mags in it. For some reason someone had it out for the SKS and fanangled a ban into the ones that took detatch mags. I don't know much about the SKS bans but I would imagine some of them had a chance to be registered.

Here are the laws for you.
12276. As used in this chapter, "assault weapon" shall mean the following designated semiautomatic firearms:
(11) SKS with detachable magazine.
12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.
(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
And yes you can use your pre-ban M1A magazines now. They can be used, but not sold, transferred, given, loaned, imported, etc.

Wow, I learned something new!! I knew about the banned SKS rifles with the detachable mags that used the AK magazines. In recall there was no option to register them right?? It was turn them in or get rid of them. But any centerfire rifle with a fixed magazine capacity over 10 rounds, makes it an assault rifle is news to me. Guess that's why all the OLL guys have to use the 10 rounders or limited to 10 rounder mags........makes sense now........in a dumb ****** sorta twisted way.
