Also, what about clones?

Not the MP5 in 9mm. But I think the .40 and 10 mm versions do.

^^ Correct. It was a feature added to the MP5/10 and MP5/40, but was never retrofitted to the MP5. I've never messed with any of the clones, but I wouldn't think any of the 9MM clones would have a feature that the original did not...

Yup, that's correct.

That's how you learn your 'going red' drop and re-insert, and SLAP that cocking lever down.

That makes sense. It's kind of hard to believe that such an expensive firearm doesn't have a last round bolt catch, I guess it is an antiquated design though.

mp5 in 10mm makes me want to move to a state where I could own such a weapon with a giant magazine.

I actually have a parts kit but I'm waiting to build it until I can do it as an SBR, real magazines and no bullet button. I just can't bring myself to californicate an MP5/10.

The 10mm clones do have a bolt hold open as well. I've never seen a 9mm clone that had one.

Hilarious parody!

It may be a hilarious read, but it's also sadly accurate. :p

Some European countries don't like last round hold open devices because of the possibility of foreign debris entering the action through the ejection port. SOP is to load the last three rounds with tracers to signal an impending mag change. If the Bundeswehr wanted a LRHO, the G3 and its offspring would have one. I personally prefer a LRHO myself, but then I cut my eyeteeth on a M16A1.

........SOP is to load the last three rounds with tracers to signal an impending mag change......

and also give the bad guys advanced warning that in 3,2,1 rounds it will be real easy to kill you.

I never understood the lack of a BHO, but if you train with it consistently you get a sense you are near the end of the mag. According to Full Circle the BW froze any changes to the G3 in the early 60's and the G3 had no BHO because the STG44 had no BHO.... "Vhy chanche zomezing from za var?" The tracer idea also has a short fall as now the enemy know you are about change mags too. The VC figured that one out pretty quick. But again you could load three in the middle and zap them when they poke their heads out....every system can be corrupted. I would say the real answer is a translucent magazine, if you can't see the cartridges, time to do a reload, but this fails at night or low light. It boils down to training imho. But then again the MP5 is akin to a shark with a laser on it's head. All the tangos are down before you have to reload or you aren't do it right ;) actually the MP5 doesnt need a BHO, it has a dual mag clamp!

I agree. I had always wondered about that little saying, now I know where it comes from.

The Inch FAL (British L1A1) had the last round open feature removed. The main reason was to avoid the intrusion of sand/debris into its inner workings. These folks also provided sand cut bolt carriers for better desert performance.
With the exception of the Czech VZ-58 (not really an AK-47) all former Warsaw Pact rifles also omitted this feature
