Hi all. Been lurking here for a year or so.

I bought my first gun today, a Ruger 10/22. I'd been planning on doing so for a year or two. I pick it up on the 3rd (CA waiting period, you know?)

Anyway, about me, I am 34. Insurance agent. Eagle Scout. No wife/no kids but I do have the occasional girlfriend. I live on the outskirts of Sebastopol CA. I bought a 10/22 because I love to tinker. My hobbies include wrenching on old Mopars and Buicks, modifying guitars and basses, tinkering with old tube amps. I share a home with a Malamute/Wolf/German Shepherd mix I rescued.

I haven't been shooting since I was 17 and I am looking forward to getting back into it. Nice meeting everyone. I look forward to interacting with people here while I continue to learn.

Welcome! Do you like potato chips? Because buying guns is a lot like eating chips, you can't have just one. :D

Hahahahahaha. I am already looking at OLL's, Mossberg 500s and 1911s! Seriously.

It felt good walking in and "buying" a gun today. Even if I don't get it until March 3rd.

Given my track record of purchasing any running vehicle or guitar under $1000 I doubt this 10/22 will be my last. Thanks for the warm welcome!

I checked out the standard blued/birch model and the synthetic/stainless. since the stainless receiver had black crinkle paint on it and I plan on eventually changing the stock and barrel I went with the cheap blue/birch model.

Welcome aboard! 10/22 was my first rifle. I bought 30 rounders, folding stock, flash hider, scope etc to make it "evil" looking (many years ago!).

Well, thanks to CA laws I still don't have my 10/22. I pick it up Friday. This is like being a kid at Christmas.

In the mean time, here are a few pics of my dog Torque and my toys. ('73 Duster 360 Magnum R/T, Guitars)
The Duster was my first car. I bought her for $900 when I was 15. I have owned that car for 19 years now. She was my daily driver for over 16. Bought her with a 318 V8 and 238K miles. That 318 was still running with 519K (I rebuilt it at 250K) when I pulled it.

(Yes, that's a Challenger in the background. I got that car for free in 1998 and gave it to my older brother. Factory yellow car. It had just been repainted the factory Top Banana Yellow when the pic of my primered Duster was taken. BUILT IN DETROIT...WHERE THE WEAK ARE KILLED AND EATEN!
And some guitars. The yellow Squier Strat I picked up for $129 after the local music store couldn't sell it for $229 for 2 years. I basically bought it because it was the best Strat neck/body for under $500. There are over 13 modifications I made to the hardware and electronics, yet it still looks stock. The heritage cherry finished Gibson Explorer is my first electric guitar I spent all summer saving for working at a Boy Scout summer camp when I was 14. I have had that guitar for 20 years now.

Hey, I see you're in Natomas, I used to work there. I was a CSR for Snap-On Franchisees until corporate closed all the regional offices. I went to IL to re-interview for my job and decided I'd rather do something else. I chose a new career and moved back to Sonoma County. Thank you for the welcome!

Like to plink? Time for you to look at the $150 HP22:chinese:

I just spent the last hour researching the Phoenix Arms HP22. Made in CA and around $150 new? I may have to get one! Do they have the "Lego set" factor aftermarket support?

For my first handgun I was thinking a USA-made 1911 and for cheap shooting a .22LR conversion kit but by the time I am done getting the 10/22 how I want it it'll be a while before I can justify spending the $$$ for a quality 1911 and the cost to modify it. I have guitars I need to finish and a Duster to get back on the road, after all!

As for home defense, I'd love a Mossberg 500/590 at some point, but I am not too worried about needing a gun for home defense. Here's my reasoning:

1. Most home-invasions around here involve someone growing pot.
2. As an insurance agent, anything of value I own is insured. A $250 deductible is a lot cheaper than legal fees AFTER being sued for shooting someone in self-defense.
3. The few people who know where I live probably don't want to jack my stuff or kill me.
4. If anyone happens to be casing my rural neighborhood they would be wise to choose a much nicer residence with a heavily-stickered Subaru or Prius parked in the driveway.
5. The first house on my property is where my landlords live. He is a diesel mechanic and she is a cop. They have guns and dogs. Our acreage has a locking gate and motion-sensing lights.
6. Any stranger who can find and is casing my neighborhood will see my 120 lb. alarm system on my property. On top of the cabin I rent not looking like a residence with anything worth stealing, the pointy end of my security system is not something most people would want to try passing. He's not an aggressive dog. He's actually a gentle-giant and tries being a lap-dog when he gets the chance but he is VERY protective of me. I'll post a handful of funny examples tomorrow. It is late and I need sleep!
