Can you shoot a 556 in a 223 barrell? I have some friends that say you can with no problems and I have friends that say absolutely not. Just looking for any opinions.

I'm interested in a white oaks barrel but heard it's only in 223?

You can safely shoot 223 in a 556 chamber but not a 556 in a 223 chamber. The leade is slightly sufferer which can cause over pressure issues. That is the basic simple answer that is correct. Yes there is a little more to it dealing with thicker brass walls etc.

You can shoot .223 from a 5.56 barrel, not necessarily the other way around. The 5.56 is a more powerful round and requires different barrel requirements. I wouldn't shoot 5.56 out of a barrel that was stamped only .223.

I believe White Oak barrels are chambered in .223 Wylde, which is supposed to be ok for 5.56 ammo. I heard that the .223 Wylde was developed for a specific competition and the ability to safely shoot 5.56 was a byproduct of that chamber. I'm sure Nathan and others can explain it better, but that's the short answer.

you can if its chambered in .223 wylde, if the barrel is .223 sammi you will have freebore issues, not safe
