You could get one of these. I have seen them at gun shows for around $899. They look the same but I think they are slightly different somehow.

PSL is AK based and not as large as an SVD. It'll get you 95% of the fun at much less cost though.

PSLs are no longer being imported.

Isn't someone making them from kits still in the U.S. I never really looked into it I'm more of an AR guy.

Dragunov/SVD's/Tigrs are on the banned list in CA. Move to a free state and watch gunbroker.com. I got my Romy PSL through Henderson Defense. Atlantic Firearms might still have them as well.

throw the skeleton stock on one of these and a bullet button and you're good to go.

An SVD/Norinco NDM-86 would cost you upwards of $4K.

That being said, I don't see SVD, Tigr, or Norinco NDM-86 on the Kasler list. I see Norinco 86 (all) on it, but if it's marked NDM-86, it ought to be fine.

You'll still need to take care of the thumbhole stock and flash hider, or lock the mag though.

This is a PSL, not the same animal. It uses an AK action and stamped receiver (I believe, SVD has a milled receiver), and there're multiple other differences.

I know its not the same thing but its the closest we can get isn't it? I was under the impression that the dragunov's were on the ban list.

They are on the ban list.

And while the PSL is the "closest we can get", it's still a different animal and should not be confused with a dragunov.

Well you can turn a 20" Saiga 7.62x39 into a Tabuk...not a SVD but a lot of fun and cheaper to shoot...you won't feel the let down of a PSL.

Christ, I never though of that!
Tabuk is what 23-24 inch barrel? So 20 inch Saiga with correct FSB/FH should be about right, right? Then just yugo handguards and the stock...oh damn it.

If you look hard enough you can find Tigers somewhat cheap, one just sold on ARFcom for 1500 and they are on the Broker all the time in the 2500 range for an unconverted Tigr. But then you will spend another 1000 to convert it from sporter into military spec.

I've seen nmd-86s go for about 5 grand on gunbroker. I've only seen one or two adds ever for a no crap KBI imported Dragunov, asked about 12000 for it.

tigers can go from 2500 to 3500.

Too much money honestly.

Not an SVD, but you get most of the looks for the PSL's price (+ some extra change). Should be about in a few months.

I wanted an SVD but instead opted for the PSL. Bought it from Atlantic a few years back and have just recently found out that they are not being imported anymore. Should have bought 2. (Why do I always realize that when it's to late?).

I have seen rebuild kits being sold for them, less receiver. So they can still be had at a decent price for those of you with tools and the skills to use them.

But for the most part it stays at home on range day. It's big, clunky, heavy, magazine changes with the Radlock are a pain, and jumps all over the place with every shot. Typical Russian/Romy weapon. It does pack a heck of a wallop being it's 54R and the "wow" factory at the range is high, but for the most part it's a job to shoot.

What's that old line about "If you've held your rifle down with your boot and used a hammer to fix it - it's Russian? (in this case Romy).

That's strange, cause mine is a pretty dang good shooter. I'm no good with optics, but with the irons I can hit pretty much whatever I aim at consistently. As far as the radlock, I just filled in the stock so its featureless.
My PSL is the only one that ALWAYS goes to the range!

Wrong. Dragunovs, Tigers and Chinese NDMs are all off list. You just gotta cough up the dough for one of these.

From a sight I saw earlier.

The SVD's (left) influence can be seen in the Iraqi Al Kadesih (center) and Romanian PSL (right).

Why are people saying they are on the "ban list"? That's completely false.

BTW there is someone making an SVD-like PSL that looks interesting.

Well I guess it's a nice little secret for those in the know, keeps the already high price from getting higher due to sudden demand from CA buyers...

hmmmm, "group Sub-moa from factory guaranteed." with an MSRP of only 750?
I usually dont trust statements like this, but if its true Im very interested.

I would take that with a few grains of salt. What ammo are they guaranteeing it with? There is soooooooo much 54R on the market these days.
regardless $750 isn't a bad price for any PSL lately. Id jump on it if I could.

every psl I've owned has been about a solid 1.75- 2ish moa gun.

Granted, I was always shooting the crappy bulgarian milsurp ammo that everyone buys, so maybe with some really nice handloads...

take out a second for a real one. only 100 or so were imported before the door slammed shut. TIGR or NDM are the closest knockoffs, both also big bucks but nothing like a real drag.
assault weapons of ohio is building m-76's on the remaining stock of ORF recievers.

The Chinese NDM-86 is the closest to the original 60's military SVD one can buy. From the receiver lightening cuts, to full length barrels, bayonet lugs and flash hiders, to the military issue scope and laminated wood furniture.

Typical Tigrs with their sporting iron sights, cheesy furniture and shortened barrel don't even come close to being a real SVD, aside from being Russian made. IMO.

Even the KBI imported SVDs have the post 1993 slab side receivers, which differs from the original SVDs from the 60's era.

Also for what it's worth, real Russian SVDs are C&R eligible, so those that have a C&R license can have one shipped to their house directly!
