Its a crime for specifically violent felons to have or wear ballistic vests. There are exceptions if needed for work.

If you're fat then your shirt will get rub marks where the steering wheel is always pushed into your shirt by your vest and everyone will tease you and no-one will want to be your friend. Besides that I don't know of anything stopping you from wearing a vest while driving.

After I had heart surgery a few years ago, I wasn't supposed to drive for about six weeks. When my wife drove, I wore my Kevlar vest. The doctor liked the idea.

I bet I know why this question is being asked. There are some vendors that frequent the gun shows selling vests with signs that say, "Bullet Proof vests will soon be illegal in CA. Get yours before it's too late!" Talk about creating a sense of urgency  Their marketing method is a blatant lie to get people to buy.

Yes, this is true. If you are not a felon, you can own any grade of Body Armor. Lvl I, II, IIa, IIIa, III, even up to IV or beyond, if there is such a grade.

Don't buy into the BS that a lot of armor distributors peddle such as (LEO/Military only), there's always eBay and gunbroker that can supply your armor needs, as well as bulletproofme.com, and even sellers here in CGN's marketplace.

There are vendors who primarily sell to LEO's who will not sell to non-LEO's. I think this along with the media is to blame for people thinking it's illegal to own any type of body armor.

I can't stand wearing them. Terrible for your posture, and not to mention that in the summer time you end up wearing a wet vest from your previous shift a lot of times. Sure, you can wash the carrier every time, but who does that? Febreeze!

Just what I was going to say.

"Bullet Proof Vests" are NOT bullet proof. They are, however, bullet resistant. The most useful body armor you can get is one that you are most likely to be wearing when you might need it (a.k.a a concealable lvl IIa or IIIa vest) instead of a IBA full combat rig.

In that situation, there is also a direct correlation to how bullet proof you are, based on how close to 10 foot tall you measure.

www.bulletproofme.com (http://www.bulletproofme.com) will sell body armor to the public as long as your not a felon. As others have said it's not illegal for non-felons to wear or own body armor, the sad thing is that a lot of companies will only sell to LE/Military.

What a fear-mongering moron that guy is. Is the stuff he peddles even worth half of what he tries to sell it for? I always avoid those idiots at gun shows, not worth anyone's time to even stop for a min.

No, most of the time he's trying to sell used second chance armor, if I remember correctly. Police trade-ins or just garbage.

I don't ever recall him selling anything worth purchasing.

As others have said, perfectly legal as long as you're not a "prohibited person" that can't purchase firearms.

I'll give a big thumbs-up to Nick and Steve at bulletproofME.com.
Excellent customer service; they take the time to fit you correctly, even over the phone by getting specific measurements. They also have a good selection, good prices, and good advice.

Don't waste a dime on the FUD vendors...

I started researching ballistic/bullet-resistant vests myself recently.

Talking with different gun owners, I am now surprised that people will buy large gun collections for the purpose of defense, and NOT invest in a ballistic vest.

People should own as many firearms as they deem appropriate for themselves. Not my business.

Just surprised that a vest costs about the same as the average handgun and so few people have them.

After a handgun, I would recommend to friends to get a properly fitted vest before investing in a long gun (which I would recommend heartily). All shooters (armed defenders) in any household should have a properly fitted personal vest. A long gun is preferable to a handgun IMO, but for many reasons, I'd recommend a handgun first. This is just my opinion.

Although a vest may be too slow to deploy in a home invasion robbery, for any situation in which any warning is provided, it's better to have available than not.

It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing. If they didn't work/weren't worth it, then law enforcement would not consider them standard equipment for the most part.

Would definitely recommend going women-specific for most females. The difference for women is night and day. Cost goes way up, but it's definitely worth it for the majority of females. Would also recommend a threat plate of some type, either the STP or Impac.

Looked into ballistic blankets and shields as well, and come to the conclusion for myself that they would be too awkward/clumsy to use effectively.

Well put voiceofreason.

It might surprise you to know that bulletproofME.com has a good selection of used vests (lightly used) for less than $300. We got one for my wife (sized specifically for a woman with shall we say... an ample chest) for $290 and it looks like it was only worn for a few days. Many of their "used" vests seem to come from cadets that wash out of police academies and therefore have little to no wear & tear.

I don't want to sound like I'm advertising for these guys or have a vested interest in their business... I'm just a very happy customer after finally getting off my arse and buying a couple of vests for me and the missus. These guys took the time to answer all my questions, shipped quickly, and had GREAT customer service (not so easy to find these days).

My friend read this thread and recognized my handle. He told me that it takes him less than 6 seconds to don his vest. I doubted that was true, but he is not a man that lies or exaggerates on a regular basis.

He keeps it flat with the sides slightly loose up on a closet shelf. He pulls it to the edge of the shelf above his head and lets gravity drop the vest over his head and torso. VERY efficient.

I timed him from him standing in front of the closet shelf. He got 3.19, 5.34, 2.95 (yes, I wrote them down). The 5.34 was because he tried to move too fast and got stuck. We agreed that his system works best when it isn't rushed. I tried it myself and got 4.10.

3-5 seconds may not be useful in a home invasion, but it is better to have and not need than to need and not have- read this last night, possibly from THIS thread!
