He didnt sign it today. It would be great if he vetoed it and said in his Austrian accent, "YOU MUST ALLOW KALEEFORNIA'S GUN OWNERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO REGISTER! Seecond Amendment rights will not be infringed!" Then he pulls out a shot gun and racks a round with one hand. Is Arnold busy writing his veto? Chances are small, but hey I can dream!

Whether or not he vetos AB2728 is almost really irrelevant. If he does sign it all it does is formalize the path the DOJ has already decided to take (not to list). It also reduces possession to a civil crime. Kinda almost makes you hope he will sign it...

My guess is either...
a) he doesn't care and just won't sign it or just veto it
b) studying it vigorously and taking advice from other Repubs on this...
c) he will listen to his wife, and sign it
d) flips a coin to decide...hmm
I'd probably go with a or b.:D but you never know...

Comming up with reasons to veto AB2728 is actually fairly easy. One could even argue they vetoed AB2728 to be "tough on Assault Weapons".

I know some of us like the "civil crime" concession by the DOJ. I suspect there is no way they can prosecute enough illegal AW owners to make a dent in the numbers of unregistered AWs. Add to that the fact that thousands more are coming into the state in the form of OLLs that guys are going to illegally configure. Will it come to the point that so many guys will be at the range shooting their AWs that NO ONE gives a hoot anymore? Or, will gun owners just hoard AWs in the dark corners of their safes, never to smell the sweet air of freedom? I've seen guys with OLL lower builds that have the Prince50 mag lock at the range many times. "It's the DOJs opinion that these are illegal" blah blah blah. No one says anything to these guys. Are we at that point now?
Most of us California gun owners, including myself, are total "Boyscouts" when it comes to following the laws. We will never commit any type of crime, even a "civil crime;" no matter how much we are tempted. We dont jaywalk or litter as some people have equated the new penalties for AW ownership. So for people like us, AB2728 really hurts. I want SB23 removed from the laws because it is unenforcable and violates our 2A rights.

It is my understanding that if he does nothing 2728 becomes law. I'm with Ben. I'm hoping he signs it or does nothing and it becomes law.
Registering rifles by listing bans them from future import into California. That is not a long term good thing for gun rights in California.

Can you really blame gun nuts for jumping onto an opportunity to build a ton-load of registered AWs? Guess its selfish on some part, but I'm sure at least 90% of the new OLL owners would be happier if DOJ listed and they got AWs...

I blame gun nuts for calling for new and expanded gun bans, whatever the reason, especially when they write to their representatives demanding them.

And that sentiment helps the Anti-gunners in the long run. Yes it would be nice if the DOJ listed but the small "victory" that it would be will hurt all of us further in the end. We wouldn't even be in this situation if the laws were fought off in the first place instead of letting them chip a little away at a time by giving in and making compromises.

You should have ended the sentence right there. The CA AW laws are forking insane. They make no sense. But they are the law. So we'll have to operate within the law; this includes having to occasionally ask the attorney general to "ban" certain weapons,
I'll stop you right there.
Whatever the reasoning ("I want cool toys! Waaah!"), advocating gun bans does not help protect or advance gun rights in this state or any other.
Gun bans are a bad idea, with no justification beyond emotional appeals to irrationality. This is the message California gun owners should be delivering, with one voice, to legislators, regulators and the public.
Too bad we can't even manage that.

I'm usually a huge fan, but the ban issue is this.
If the DOJ places the rifle on the list, they effectively end the import of that rifle. That's enough of a ban to be a ban under most any analysis.

I will say two things. One is anti-ban, one is actually pro-ban.
Anti: I really don't want to deal with AW transport regulations. It'd be awfully convenient if my Armalite-upper'ed AR with the Monsterman grip could stay that way.
Pro: If there WERE to be a series of listings, say once a quarter or so, do you guys have any idea how many new gun owners we'd have in California? It'd be mid-December all over again! Remember, OLL's politically motivate Californians in ways that C&Rs and PC-looking rifles absolutely do not!

The funniest part about this comes when you read the analysis of the decision by one of the dissenting judges. I can't recall his name right now, but he uses the phrase "eviscerates the AW ban" in describing the loopholes created by the Harrott decision. I don't know how it worked out the way that it did, but it was damned near the best thing to happen in CA in a long, long time.

You got it, brother.
When I started looking around the web for information on firearms, it was as a new owner of several M1As and a few pistols. People told me about guns that I "missed the boat on buying by several years." I googled said guns, and low and behold, found Calguns.net.
The idea that I could actually get legal versions of AK, AR, FAL, HK-91, etc. firearms fascinated me. Since then, like others who are new to the scene but eager to catch up and do their part in CA gun advocacy, I've been reading (and in some cases) exhuming old threads.
Wish I'd be around since the 90s and got stuff before the bans set in, but better late than never at al. I've already got several other "newbs" to buy into the OL bandwagon, so it's not just a matter of looky lou stuff...

Good question. I have a registered AR and it's a full-up battle rifle. Only once in the past ten years did I have to show the papers anyone, and it was to shut up some busy-body claiming to be a cop spouting off all sorts of "we don't like civilians to have those kinds of guns" nonsense. (The look on his face was something to behold.)
The truth is, I can take it to the range every day and people are far more interested in the OLLs that are there. I might get a passing glance, but that's it. I think there's so many "CA legal" ARs out there that no one's sure what's legal or illegal anymore.

I work at a hospital and one thing that I've taken to doing is to inviting people to come along with my wife and I to an indoor range to shoot our 9mm and 357 mags. So far, I've had a few people express interest. Ironically, they're people who advertise themselves as "anti-gun Berkeley/UCSF" types, but when given the opportunity to try out handguns, they jump at the chance.
Dissolving resistance from within, one "anti" at a time...

Any ban effectively ends for all generations to come their ability to possess such firearms. It may not be in our lifetime, but there *will* come a time when a generation will truly need all the arms that they can get. That is why bans are bad.

why in the wide, wide, world of sports would anyone want forced registration of any firearm? seems to me like they just want to know where to get them come outright ban time.

Some people where hoping to register them as AWs so they could unlock their mags or put their PGs back on.
