So I read this. But I don't know if I am understanding this as I am reading it.

So if My father wants to give me 3 shotguns he can with no paperwork, fee's or 10 day wait?

How would the state know I have them or I am now the owner of them?

State doesn't know you have them even if you bought them from Big 5. There is no mandatory registration of shotguns in CA.

As long as both of you are CA residents; your dad can gift you the 3 shotguns FTF (no CA FFL dealer needed) with no paperwork, no fees and no 10 day waiting period.

There is no long gun registration in CA.
If you want them registered in your name, you can voluntarily register them with CA DOJ. You can do this by sending in a Firearm Ownership Record (http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/volreg.pdf) form and $19 per firearm to CA DOJ BOF.
