LODI – A Lodi gun store owner who was shot in the forehead Thursday night during what police believe was an armed robbery drove himself home after the incident.

Carl Nick Flores, owner of Nick’s Gunworks, was wounded in the apparent robbery at his gun store at 440 E. Lodi Ave., Lodi police Detective Nick Rafiq said.

Rafiq said it appears the 60-year-old Flores was unconscious on the floor of the shop for some time before he got up, locked the business and drove to his home a few blocks away. Police were called to the west Lodi home at about 9:30 p.m. after Flores’ wife found him in the living room with the head wound and contacted police.

“It appears to be a small firearm, possibly a .22-caliber,” Rafiq said. “The bullet did not pass through his skull but exited through the left temple.”

Flores was taken to Lodi Memorial Hospital and later to the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento.

Flores is reportedly in stable condition, Rafiq said, and was conscious when contacted by police late Thursday, although he had no recollection of what happened.

Rafiq said the gun store, which is located at street level amid a strip of retail and commercial businesses and is across the street from a grocery store on Lodi Avenue, is not equipped with surveillance cameras. However, police are searching for two “people of interest” in the case based on information provided by witnesses.

Witnesses told police that a gray 1980s Nissan sedan pulled up to the store between 6 and 6:15 p.m. Two men exited the car and “were acting suspicious,” Rafiq said.

One of the men is described as a black man, 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 170 pounds. The second man is described as black, 6 feet 1 inches tall and about 180 pounds, Rafiq said. Both men were seen wearing all black clothing and gloves, witnesses told police.

Rafiq said anyone arrested in the case likely will face charges of attempted murder and robbery. He encouraged anybody with information to contact him at (209) 333-6747.
