View Full Version : Glass Factory Range Clean Up - Santa Barbara - SUNDAY MARCH 13!

There has been discussion for a while on starting up another range clean up day up at the Glass Factory - here it is!

http://sbglassfactory.com/glassfactory.JPG

The date many people have thought about is

SUNDAY, MARCH 13.

Meet at Glass Factory at 9AM

DIRECTIONS TO THE RANGE: (Edit Point A to your start location): http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=santa%20barbara&daddr=34.5060111111%2C-119.75331048%20%28%22Glass%20Factory%22%29&ie=utf-8&v=2.1&cv=4.1.7076.4458&hl=en

Post below if you will be attending, and if you will have any other guests with you. I will add you to the list below. Itd be a good idea if each person can bring a rake or shovel and some trashbags, along with a pair of gloves. I will have several rolls of trashbags and 10 rakes or so left over from the last cleanup.

I will also have an 18' utility trailer that we can load up and I will haul to the dump.

I want to help keep E. Camino Cielo Glass Factory Range Open!:

Great start guys!

gttur - as far as I know I dont have any provisions or plans for doing that. The previous clean ups Ive participated in werent in coop with BLM or Rangers, as I guess the last one was. We simply showed up first thing in the morning and mob mentality set in - no one is going to shoot when there are 30 people on the range with trashbags haha.

I believe what we did last time was create a few flyers/signs and posted them up there a week or two in advance to alert locals to the range being closed, as well as recruit some more help!

It has not been closed for quite awhile to the best of my knowledge, and was open today. Weekends are sometimes too crowded... But today was nice.
Signs are posted that E Camino Cielo is closed at Gibralter, (9 mi east of Paradise road) but it's no problem getting there from 154 or Paradise Rd.
I'd have taken a pic but it looked like a dump.
See you all there on the 13th.

I'm in for this one. Hopefully I can convince my wife to join in (and shoot afterwords for a little bit).

I'll drive my truck up, with some garbage cans and whatever else I can get rid of. If you can't toss it at the dump just add some to your regular trash can for a couple of weeks. That's how I get rid of stuff that's not big enough to make a dump run, but needs to be trashed.

If anything it's good exercise for an hour or 2 (I have No idea how long you guys do this for). Then a little shooting never hurt right?

Cool! Obviously, the more people that show up, the quicker it goes.

If I remember correctly in about 3 hours we knocked out a CONSIDERABLE amount at the range.

What worked best was to have some individuals with large rakes raking into piles, then other teams (or solo) with a garbage bag and shovel. The rakers can set out and make piles, the shovelers come in behind and bag and carry to the trash area. If we stay organized and work somewhat in a pattern it will be quick work.

I've contacted Larry from the forest service but he says they don't have the resources to help us out.

I also contacted Craig (kidnk9s) who setup one of the last big clean ups. He will see what he can do about hopefully getting Marborg to help out again with a dumpster. Hopefully we won't need any trailers brought up with us.

As Craig did before, I will supply hotdogs and bottled water to all that help us with this project.

More to come before this happens I'm sure:D

I was out there this past Sunday. It is really bad out there. There were also several people drinking which made me very nervous. I saw many people drag trash out there and then not take it with them when they left. It just pi*ses me off. I take EVERYTHING that I bring out there. We even had a water bottle set up way on the hill. When we were done, we ran up there and picked it up. It doesn't take that long to do this and it isn't rocket science. Wow people are lazy.

This is why we need to educate as well as have these clean ups. Most people don't even think about picking up after themselves. They are under the impression that this is the Rangers job.

Everyone that sees me raking up shells and bagging up the trash thank me and say why didn't I think of bringing bags with me.

Hard to see the trash with the snow and distance of the picture. ...Cars obscured to respect everyone's privacy. Looking forward to helping get this place cleaned up a little next month.

If anyone is familiar with this area, there is a smaller open range on W. Camino Cielo, but the dirt road can get a little hanky 2WD could make it before the rains this year, but I haven't been back since Nov. Range is a mile or two past the gate. I've picked up a bit of the trash, but have not made much of a difference. I'm glad to see so many more Calgunners helping keep these places from turning into dumps.

Who here was there during the last clean-up?
The reason why I ask is I was there with my two boys. I have a Light metalic colored Chev 4x4 HD shortbed crew. We had the place closed by the LPFS and used two and one half large roll offs donated by Marlborg. One gentleman brought his little BBQ and served excellent hot dogs and ice cold water for everyone. My hats off!!!! There were quite a few forestry hot shotters out of Ojai. My boys were wowed by them!

I have been active in clean-up with this place since the mid 80's. I have permission to use the Cielo FS dumpster for impromptu cleanup as long as I don't overflow and otherwise hinder their effort.

And yes, I will be there with my two youngsters, Brian and Scott.

That was kidnk9s/Craig. Craig organized the last clean up in July 2010, and BBQed for those who helped. That was a big effort on Craigs part to get the Forestry Service, Hot Shots, local businesses and gun stores to pitch in.

This is correct. I contacted the Forestry Service about this cleanup but I was told they couldn't help us out this time( no funding).

I have contacted Craig to help us out with his Marborg contact to see if they are interested in helping us again.

Flyers posted around the towns would be a great help to make sure people are aware there is a cleanup planned. Is anyone good at making these things? Possibly place some flyers at the site as well?

OK, here is the skinny right off the hot plate:

The contact in the LPFS for this type of activity is Larry Griffith. Number is 805-967-3481 x216.

Larry and I have just got off the phone together. Larry is a bit taken back by the news as his info is pretty short notice. However, he is totally amenable to being at the range at 0900 on the 13th to close it down.
I gave him the total lowdown of the info I've gathered from here. He would like everyone know that it is not advisable at all to attempt any clean up without the assistance of the Forestry Service for safety and liability issues. I'm sure that we are all aware of issues that could arise following telling a stranger that the place is closed and they can help or hit the road(not in those terms mind you)

The dumpsters as mentioned above are from Marborg via Craig and his own personal arrangements. The previous clean-up was well advertised, so much so that KEYT-3 was up there to do a story on it(with a bit of left spin). I was interviewed and made the news trying to reverse some of that added spin in order to stress the fact that this is one of the many uses of Los Padres and it's enjoyed by countless thousands of people(though admmitedly untidy are some).

The LPFS needs a bunch of time (couple months I'd say) in order to prep. They definitely can put some folks on it with us volunteers.

So, from a newcomer here at Calguns.net, I hit the ground running. You folks move fast. I look forward to meeting those who show up. Larry figures closed at 0900, open at 1300. That which can't be hauled will be stacked up in places designated by him.

See ya'll!

I read your response. Were you thinking that I didn't?

Seriously, without official presence, it is dangerous to attempt to shut down a public place in the Forest like this.

I couldn't bring my boys with me on an outing that wasn't controlled by the Forestry Service.

That's pretty much the basis for me giving Larry the call today.

I was out there yesterday and let everyone know (who was shooting there) that there will be a clean-up in 2 weekends. Some said they will go, so hopefully they still will.

Bigdaa- there will be no issues with closing the range down. Last November I organized a clean up and there were only 6 of us. The ranger came out and shut the range down and stayed with us to assist. No one had any problems. In fact, most people don't even arrive to that range until noon anyways....which is when we should be done.

Anyways, the range actually looked better than it did when I went 2 weekends ago. So with 20+ people attending, we should knock out the clean up pretty quickly.

Thanks,
Lauren

Well, you had a Ranger shutting it down. That's the most important point to be made.

I was there two weeks ago with my Brother and my son Scott. It was a squeeze to get a place up top. I mean wall to wall at 0900. For what reason everyone collected there, I don't know.

I know you folks don't know be from Adam, but you can take it to the bank that I've shot these areas up here including Arroyo Burro Road (glass factory) since I was a kid in the 60's with my Dad.
I was there shooting Gibraltar Road when they shut it down back in the 80's. Same with West Camino Cielo half a mile from Winchester Gun Club when they shut that one down.
Back in the late 80's and 90's I worked in a private group coordinating with Mel Sanchez the cleanups involving use of the Forestry stake bed, and trash compactor, using the help of the boys from Los Prietos.

Back in the Mel Sanchez days, there was a Forestry rep who had a major hard-on for closing the range, leaving nowhere to shoot legally! He would sit in his private pickup and click off pictures of people putting trash out to blow the sh-t out of. I reported him to the police thinking that he was scoping people to rip off later(hehehehehehehe)

I've spent so freaking much personal time and effort up there being one of the "good guys" trying to keep the range open for everyone else (especially me and my two growing boys) it might make you dizzy. I don't even know how this go around is going to go, personally, as lately, my shoulders are totally munched and in need of operations, but WTF.......I got Brian and Scotty, and I bribed them with the promise of putting the first rounds through my new riot gun.

So.........I've shot there so many rounds it would make anyones pocketbook ache. I've spray painted away gang gibberish on the boulders with sand colored Krylon, I've found magazines people misplaced, I've shot at some guys old Yamaha 600 he put to death up there along with a forlorn Vespa destined for the Foxen Canyon landfill. Every form of detritus has had some Bigdaa ammo through it, and some of it got back at me by cutting the living snot out of my hands trying to get it into the back of my truck to throw away.

Oh...................I've seen people blow away those cool looking speedy lizards up there. What a heartbreaker! I am confident it wasn't anyone here.

Hope to meet some good people on that Sunday.

I got a buzz cut head, a graying biker goatee/beard (I'm a biker allright.....ZX10R Ninja Bike!!!!!) and am 6'1", 230. Yes, ugly is stacked tall!:)

PS........Man, most of the people I have run across up there are swell folk, but as anyone might guess, I have seen more than my share of incredible 'humans' of the bad to the worst spectrum. WTF....it's a public place and some of the public are not very nice to be around. I've seen people drunk and or high point loaded guns in the faces of other, even themselves with the fingers on the trigger! I've been around gang bangers who never run in nothing less than a pack, even a time where 6 came my way while I was shooting my RPK (alone)! That was a hairy day where it was best to pack up at the soonest possible time which I did. And that wasn't the only time I had to leave early because of someone else. I bet dollars to donuts the stories are repeated all across this state to some extent.

It sounds like you've been a great resource to the local shooting world. I thank you for all your hard work. If it wasn't for you I might not of even had a chance to partake in this hobby.

Thanks, bro. Often times it feels like a total uphill battle (because in California it is) but I really really really want this place open to enjoy it with my kids and friends.

I've got a bunch of guns and even more ammo. I'd hate to have to pay club fees all the time, though I do on more than just occasion. You know, like I said before:

Los Padres National Forest has always had the motto of "land of Many Uses" and folks tend to forget that shooting is one of them and has always been, well before the Forest was established. My relatives have been mucking around the hills for more than a couple centuries! They might have been using arrows at one time, but that's besides the point.

A ranger I spoke with mentioned it'd be a good idea to do this so I'm gonna ride up there at lunch tomorrow to place a few of signs up, one at the 154 turn-off, one where Painted Cave meets E. Camino and one at the site alerting folks that the site will be cleaned-up at 9 AM on the 13th. A good excuse to go for a ride at lunch, might get some more help, might get some more trash too I suppose.

Also, I've e-mailed one of the Borgatello brothers at Marborg a few days ago about getting a roll-off, haven't heard anything back yet though...

I went up there this morning, and the rangers have taped signs onto the benches giving notice that the range will be closed on Sunday for a "volunteer cleanup", also gave a contact number and invited people to join.

I tried to recruit a few of the shooters that were there as well. Hopefully they'll show up.

The range has been pretty busy for the past few weekends. I think we may have a lot of people showing up to shoot, who have no idea about the cleanup. Do you think this could be an issue?

^^ Yes, I've read all of them. Thanks.

Last time we did a clean up it was cold and rainy out so people showing up to shoot wasn't much of an issue. The point I was trying to make was that since the weather has been warmer lately this could be more of an issue. Especially since the nicer it is up there, the more "unsavory" characters show up.

It seems like you have plenty of experience with these characters, as do I. I was up there last saturday, and during a "cease-fire" shots were fired while we still had people down range! One of the people down range was me.

Just wanted to make sure that the rangers will be there to enforce the range being closed so we don't have any issues.

Ahhh, someone was shooting during a cease fire!? How annoying.

I was out there last Sunday and there were more people out there who were drunk. They were nice though, but definitely wasted. Luckily they only had .22's.....which can still be deadly.....but a higher chance of surviving (if accidentally shot) than let's say a .45

I was not told how big it will be, only that it will be dropped off at 830 and picked up at 2. The only other thing is that we can't fill it up past the rim. But looking at the picture of the range that might not be a problem.

That is correct -- according to the posted rules, paper/cardboard targets only though. There is usually a large selection of plinking targets (trash) in the area, although we will likely be cleaning up as much of it as we can.

Last time I was up there (a couple weeks ago) there was a shot out big screen tv and a bunch of other random electronics. as well as the normal bottles/cans and stuff.

Hey fellow Calgunners!

Sooooooo glad to see that so many people appreciate this place as much as I do and are willing to make sure it stays open for all of us to enjoy!

I'm gonna be at the cleanup tomorrow and I'm tryin to get my SS-15 set up after we're done makin the range all nice & clean. Anyone got a 1" ring/base combo or a riser that they want to sell that'd work with an 'AR style' flattop upper? I'm tryin to get my scope on this thing and my rings are way too low. Any other solution or suggestion would be appreciated! Also lookin for a magpul MBUS rear backup sight if anyone's got one they're lookin to part with.

I know this belongs in a different section but I figured if anyone's got what I'm lookin for and comin' to the clean up tomorrow, bring it with you and we'll make something happen!

Thanks!

BTW, I'll be wearing a trashy Budweiser hat and a UCSB sweatshirt.

Marborg delivered the dumpster on Saturday and will pick it up Monday morning... for they do not offer service on Sunday. This is the main reason for only getting one rolloff. Gloves and masks are very important for all... You will be handling hazardous materials. Lots of plastic bags and try not to overfill them... less chance for more of a mess.

I wish I could be up there. Good luck and be safe.

Since 1986 I've cleaned this place up.

However, this was the coolest cleanup in my book. What a bunch of great folk. The resources were awesome.

Brian, my 13 year old sucked down donuts (Thx Lulu!) and excellent hotdogs and chips (Thx gtturbo!)

It would seem that the one that actually fell on his face here was Forestry Service Larry as according to him he was caught in the office and was not able to meet his 0900 closure commitment, so it took the massive presence of the public showing to "Put Down The Law"

Let me tell you, I reminded Larry in no uncertain terms that we counted on him to hold up his end of the log!

So many thanks need to go out to Marborg and Craig for this increadible asset. That roll-off really his the spot, didn't it! There were quite a number of regular shooters not affiliated with calguns who knocked out a good mornings work. I'll tell everyone that this was a Stupendous Sunday!

What I got a kick out of was the hardware folks brought. I don't think I've ever seen such a collection of seriously nice AR's anywhere outside a sizeable gun show. Lordy! I look at my pair and I see Plain Jane(don't get me wrong, they are MY GIRLS!!!!!!). Awesome Thunder Sticks. I got to see one sweet azz Deep Blue Colt Python (ya, I had a woody, but it's pretty tiny so it didn't make anyone uncomfortable)

And one of the sweetest 35 Rem Lever Action I've EVER seen (WWO!!!!!!)

After the cleanup and sufficient hotdog consumption, a few barley pops, sodas, waters (all ice cold) man alive, it was blast city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I was extremely happy to have my son Brian pop the cherry so to speak on my latest riot gun. The firing line was AR city. Heeze Louise!!!!

You folks have good taste in American Firepower. Not saying that was the only thing up there, but whooot whoot!

I'd like to thank the young gent who let my boy fire off his very nice Mosin. Chime in please. He go such a kick. TMy two have been poking me to pick one up. It's inevitable now!

Your welcome and thanks for the help. The next one should be in a few months so stay tuned!

We also need to send a thank you card to Marborg so they know that their generosity is greatly appreciated. I'm not much of a letter writer so if someone can take charge of it that would be great. Maybe sign it saying "Calgun Members" (if that's ok with Kes).

Dallasdowning - I agree. It was definitely a lot safer shooting with fellow calgunners than with the usual drunks who seem to pile there in the afternoon. Me and Schmidtdogg usually go up there every other Sunday morning. Next time we will be up there is next Sunday (the 27th).

I will try to make it up there on the 27th as well.

Ok, here are a couple of ideas of things we could send to Marborg.

Cookies: $12.99
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s221/LULU1986_photo/Cookies.jpg

Chocolates: $22.99
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s221/LULU1986_photo/Chocolates.jpg

Or we can send a gift basket of various chocolates for about $50.

This is through 1-800-Flowers. I chose them because they can deliver and we can add a note to go with the gift.

Let me know what you guys think!

I will probably be there around 9. I am about an hour away from the Glass Factory and I don't like to get up too early :D

Although, I MIGHT get there a little earlier depending on what everyone is planning.

Whatever we do we should do it quickly. Hopefully get it delivered by tomorrow.

I think a $50 gift basket will be good with a nice thank you note. If a few of us go in on it, we will only be pitching in $10-15 each. No biggie. Let me know what my share is.

Are we SURE this is the right address of where the dumpster actually came from?

On google maps it is also showing another address of 136 North Quarantina Street in SB.

I just want to make sure it gets to the right place. Also - is there a contact name?

I'll pitch on the basket, let me know how much you need.

27th sounds good 9-9:30 is good for me. Sounds like its gonna be fun.
Maybe someone should make another thread for Glass factory meetups? Maybe organize into a group of some sort to make it easy for cleanups and meets?

Ok everyone. I purchased the gift basket. It will be sent to David next Tuesday. It ended up being $76 after shipping and taxes so any donations will help! Like I said, I would pitch in $15 and Deadbolt already pitched in money. So just donate what you can. No biggie if it isn't a lot.

I forgot to mention, please post in here if you contribute for the gift basket. I don't want to end up making a profit off of this hahaha. Like I said, I would donate $15. So there is a balance of $55 left. If you can't help out, no worries. I am prepared to cover the cost.
