Just like the title asks, which mil-surps and C&R rifles did most of you guys start with, AND why did you pick that one? I'm eyeing a 91/30 for the low cost and the ammo availability at the moment.

I started with the M1 Garand from the CMP, since there was a training class on its operation, it was easy to get, and to own a piece of history.

This question would be better suited for the C&R forum... But anyways, Mosin Nagant for me. It's cheap, common, and ammo is readily available for a decent price. Also loud boom.

My first was a Big 5 Mosin M44.

CMP - M1 Garand followed by an M1 Carbine. Not really big on foreign milsurp stuff.

Big 5 M44 due to history and price.

Started with a Czech VZ24 Mauser from Big 5. It sat in the safe for a couple years uncleaned or used. One day I cleaned it up and took it out. I liked it and the G/F fell in love with it. By this time Big 5 didn't have VZ24's anymore. So what was next in inexpensive 30 Cal. WWII power she asked. So M44 and 91/30 Mossins now fill an entire Gun safe by them selves and she's Still buying them ! :o

Be careful. These Mil-surps tend to multiply. :D

I already had an M1 Garand but my first 03FFL purchase was a 91/30 at J&G Sales because of history, price and ammo cost.

If you don't already have an 03FFL, I suggest you get one because of: http://www.aimsurplus.com/catalog.aspx?groupid=254&name=Curio+%26+Relic+Firearms and http://www.jgsales.com/index.php/c/c-r-guns/cPath/290

And when you get your 91/30 be sure to check out: http://www.7.62x54r.net/

An M44 Mosin-Nagant from Big 5. At one of my high school gun club range trips one of my friends brought an M44 and M38 and I thought they looked cool, especially the M44 with a folding bayonet. When i found out the cost of ammo and also of the rifles on sale at Big 5 I just had to have one, especially since I only had a Ruger 10/22 and a muzzle loading rifle at that point. So I bought it (well, my father did, I was 16, but I paid for it). They forgot to give my dad the accessories (he didn't know they came with them) and I think they also charged sales tax on the DROS and other fees but another friend who had multiple Mosin-Nagants gave me some of his extra accessories and overall I'm happy with it. Just wish there was a front sight tool available for it to adjust windage precisely.

My first centerfire rifle was a 91/30 from big 5. It was only $49 and that was in 2004. It's an inexpensive rifle that shoots fairly inexpensive ammo. They are very reliable and easy to maintain.

However on mine the bolt gets stuck shut 90% of the time with steel cased ammo.

My first C&R was a 91/30. I bought it a few weeks ago from a fellow Calgunner. I bought the rifle for the cheap ammo, history, and as a project. Looking forward to putting some TLC into the rifle.

Just picked up a 1948 mosin M44 with folding bayonet at the costa mesa gun show today, in very good condition, happened to see the guy waiting in line to get in. Wasn't planning on the purchase at all but for the price I couldn't shine it. Very happy with my decision.

Went to Big 5 right after watching Enemy at the gates (2001) and bought a '53 Romanian M44 ($49) and a '26 VZ24 ($69, non-scrubbed 3 line BRNO crest) . I've been hooked on C&R's ever since.

my first c&r was a savage 99 in .300sav. it was my favorite rifle, until some jackwagon thought it would be cute to bust out a window in my house and take a bunch of my stuff. still mad about that. first c&r surplus was a big5 m44 that was completely shot out, souring me to the idea of mosins for several years. i promptly sold it and later got my garand mk2 with the insurance money from the home invasion (and a good safe). still have it, still love it.

My first C&R was a Finnish M/24. I thought it was a 1891 Mosin Nagant for many years. Great gun. I still have it in a safe somewhere.

M95 Steyr. AIM had them several years ago and as an owner of 2 K31 Swiss carbines I was into the straight pull thing.

Mosin 91/30 1943 Izhevsk.

The only reason I am not buying more milsurps is because I want an AR.

01-30-2011, 9:12 PM
1944 M44 izzy. Also my first rifle. Most of my friends had 91/30's so I wanted something a little different.
Man I love that thing. One of these days I might even get arround to adjusting the front sight.

Real RGUNS mosin nagant PU sniper with scope.

I paid the normal $800 and got a numbers matching '44 Tula in good shape.

I sold it to a fellow calgunner to buy some off roster handguns in AZ (Gen 4 G17 and OD Green LCP).
I have now since sold both of those. Traded one for an AK and sold one to buy a CMP Garand which is on its way.
I still wish I hadn't sold it, but I made money off of it in theory.

Mine was a 1941 Nazi stamped K98 Mauser 8mm. Great hunting rifle!!

Russian SKS was my first milsurp rifle, first C&R was a Russian Mosin M44.

01-31-2011, 12:21 AM
1959 Romanian SKS earlier this month. I got a great deal and wanted a project to bubba but it just looks too nice to change...

My first personal rifle was a Mosin M38, best and most cost effective purchase I have ever made.

01-31-2011, 12:30 AM
I had already owned a few Garands before I got my C&R. First purchases w/ the license were an 03A3 & Swiss K31.

01-31-2011, 5:59 AM
I started with the M1 Garand from the CMP <SNIP>

Me too. Although mine wasn't cheap being a CMP M1 special at $995 plus shipping but I like it enough that I've been thinking of getting another....
