If you were planning a safari to the continent of Africa where would you go and which half dozen guns would you take? (Please be realistic -- guns you already own or are likely to actually own some day. No fully/semi-auto and no current military caliber rounds as you likely couldn't get them into any country in Africa.)

I would like to go to Kenya and South Africa. My list:

Weatherby MK V in .460 WM (the Lazermark stock is fairly embarrassing but it certainly was priced right and it's the only large caliber rifle I own.)

Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine in 30.06

Steyr Zephyr .22 carbine

Remington 870 12 gauge

S&W Model 29 in .44 mag with 8 3/8" barrel

Colt Trooper MK III .22 with 6" barrel

Um, I think you can only bring two into SA...

2 is correct and .375 is an excellent choice for a one rifle safari.

I took 2 Remington 700's one chambered for Winchester .270 and the other .300WSM.

300 mag for plains.
one of the following for larger
416 ruger,
375 h&h,458 lott, and practice a lot first.
Most countries in africa, I heard won't let you bring hand guns.

Purdey,
It all depends on what you are planning on taking. On a plains game hunt, your 30.06 will be plenty, and will allow you to take anything on a plains game package. The 30.06 is probably the most popular calibre under local hunters. If you are planning on DG, then .375 is minimum in RSA.
If you need any more questions answered, please fire away or drop me a PM.

Best Regards
Marius

My brother and I went in 07. He took his 300 Ultra Mag and I took my 300 Win. We hunted SA for plains game and took 12 animals. My father has been to SA and Tanzania. He took a 375, his 30-06 Improved and my 270. on his TZ trip he took a Cape Buffalo and warthog with the 375 and used the -06 for everything else.

Lots of restrictions on pistols so I wouldn’t even think of bringing one and if I was going to hunt birds, I would just use the PHs shotgun.

I would take my .300 Winmag Browning A-bolt for large game and my .223 Browning A-Bolt for the jackals.
