View Full Version : Big5 Mossberg on Sale - Q's

Was looking to pick up and add at least 1 shotty to the collection :D . I would like a nice "tactical" look, but at this point not into spending too much - have to reserve the better part of the funds for more OLL's.

Really want a semi auto; I do like the M1, and really should call around to find out if anyone has them in stock, and at what price. The Mossberg at Big5 (per their sale add) is a decent price (the Vent Rib), whcih by chance is also their sale price on the Rem 870. Take an additional 10% off with their coupon, and it sounds pretty tempting (sale ends today).

Shotty will be used mainly at the range. I think im talking myself into the M1

LMAO I dont know..;)

I do like the fact that this comes with 2 barrels. I assume at this point that you have had to chance to swap them both out - how did you like the performance of the 2?

I sold the longer vent rib on ebay for $55 and only use the shorter one for HD. Then used that money towards a stock :)

When at home the 500 sports the 18" barrel, top folding stock, and forward grip.

If I want to go shoot trap I just swap it over to the stock config and 28" barrel. I have also shot trap with the 18" barrel :D . Its fun doing almost as good as the guys with their uber expensive Benellis when my barrel doesn't even touch the top of the stand.

Edit: Whats another ~$250 - ok more like 80/20 now - DOH!!!

So how much is the Mossberg today?

I think it is still the same price ($240). Sale ads are near the top right at www.big5sportinggoods.com

I check their site every week to see if anything new pops up. They've pretty much been doing the same loop for a while now although the price of the 10/22 seems to have gone up and they added the US Property marked Enfields to the surplus list. I've been trying to figure out if $160 minus 10% is a decent price for that Enfield (Century Arms in good condition).

I like my Mossberg 500 short/long barrel combo. I've only used the short barrel; that ebay idea sounds like a good one.

I purchased the Mossy 500 combo from Big 5 a few years ago and I treat that shotgun like I stole it.
It keeps firing every time I pull the trigger. Its a good deal.

Just bought one today! $280 at the register after DROS fees. My intent was to get a Remington 870, but after talking with the manager there for 30 min about his experiences with both guns, i was sold on the mossberg. Plus 2 barrels with 1 gun, couldnt pass that up.

Hope you enjoy whichever decision you make.

I bought the combo in 20g last year for $270+ OTD. No complaint so far. I heard that the safety button is the first one to break but you can get one from Brownell's made of aluminum. Besides the G22, that is my bedside companion...and my wife too.

I didn't know they had the combo in 20g. I'll have to check that out for the wifey.

They don't always have the 20g in stock, but they'll order it for you at the sale price.

IIRC, the 20g version comes with screw in chokes

I bought the 12g combo a couple of months ago and think it's a great value. Also, the package doesnt need to be on sale for you to get it at a sale price. I just asked the manager if they could sell it for the $229 sale price and he did.

Oh, there's a 10% off coupon on the Big5 website. Good on one sale or non-sale item.

Heres a tip for you guys.

Buy the combo kit for $209...total out the door about $250-260. Sell the extra barrel on ebay. I put my barrel up on ebay and it sold for $120. In the end, I payed about $130 for a brand new shotgun. :D

hell I'm keeping my 28 inch barrel. All I need to do now is to get a wooden stock and within 2 munites I can have a conservative looking field gun or a short-barreled folding stock HD gun.

One left at the Daly City location.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Bought mine last night and with the coupon it was only $228.00 out the door. FYI, if your in the San Jose area, the Blossom hill store claimed to have six left. The Stevens Creek and Campbell locations are out of stock on the 12 gauge model.

The store on Tully Rd in San Jose would not honor the 10% coupon for firearms!

They had 2 Moss500 combo left in stock.

Or go to a different one.

The manager was the one that did my transaction. When I showed him the coupon, he said, "...that's my discount." Looks like employee discount is 10%.

Anyhow, he read the coupon carefully and it does not have any restrictions on firearms.

They almost wouldn't let me use the coupon on my shotgun today. Wasn't until I told them that I can, and already did before on the last rifle I bought.

Wonder if Big 5 HQ has ever sent a memo to their stores letting them know that they have coupons on the website.

My brother and I just went to our local Big5 and he got the Mossberg 500 on sale. With the coupon the total out the door cost was $227. I am tempted to get one myself now. :D Great deal!

Don't on the managers knowing the same amount or knowing store policy.

I went in, said I want to buy one, and made the mistake of showing the manager the coupon printout before doing any paperwork. The idiot spent 10 minutes studying it before he finally decided that he needed the "larger image" ... I asked him if he could go to the web page on his own computers, asked if there was anyone he could call...he kept saying I needed to go print out the larger image and bring that back. I asked if he was happy losing my business... he let me walk out the door not buying anything.

So I went back the next day (it is right by where I normally eat lunch... on my way home too), talked to a different manager, and that guy didn't even blink an eye just said, "yep, that'll work, just show it to the cashier and she'll know what to do with it."

At that point I complained about the previous manager... saying that he had told me to come back with the larger printout. The second manager's responce was, "But it's the same thing! The bigger image looks just like the small one and has the same information. I'll have a talk with him and I appologize." Grrr.

The cashier had no problem applying the discount with no help or explanation from the manager, BTW. Chances are if I'd just given the cashier the coupon on the first visit I would've been fine.

$227.68 out the door is a pretty sweet deal though.

what was great is they couldn't give me the $25 DROS fee for the 20ga back since it already went through.

i eventually harassed them enough to knock $25 off the gun i wanted to even it out...

While on the subject of Big 5 did anybody else notice the Remington Varminter in .308 with laminated stock? The asking price was $799.99. I asked when they would go on sale and was told that they were new and hadn't been in the store long enough to be marked down.

Also took a look at the Stevens Model 200 bolt action rifle in 30-06. I like the idea of a 30-06 with iron sights but the stock was so light and thin that I have seen bb guns with more weight to them. They even had a Browning pump shotgun. Nice to see something new for a change.
