I want to mount a scope on a mini 14 for a young shooter. What would you suggest for a mount and what would be a nice scope. The kid is just getting into shooting.
Where is a good source for 5/10 round mags? Thanks for your help?

No. It hits targets that I aim at. No need for a scope.:)

B-Square makes a mount and I think that S&K does.

Most Mini-14s have scope ring mounting points machined into the upper part of the receiver. Look for little half moon indents, two on each side. These take Ruger's proprietary scope rings, which are not terribly expensive and they work. They come in different diameters depending on the scope.

Also, there are after market picatinny rails which clamp directly to the above mounting points.

I have a new model Ruger Ranch Rifle and am using Ruger's scope rings on it. they are rock solid.

For all things Mini-14 go to the perfectunion.com website. If you don't have the scope ring scallops in your mini-14 (the ranch rifle version) you can use the Jack Weigand mount.

the ones ive seen you replace the bolt hold open cover and the mount threads to that kind of like the m1a

Easiest way is with the integral mounts, if the rifle has them. Otherwise the side cover mounts are probably the cheapest, but I can't comment on their durability. A Scout scope setup is handy, but may be pricey for a new shooter.

Don't waste money on aftermarket mags. Midway USA has Ruger 5-rounders for $20 right now. You might find them cheaper elsewhere, but don't buy anything else.

sorry i guess there are 2 "mini 14"s now

the first mini 14 had no mounts

then ruger came out with the "mini 14 ranch model" that had integral mounts but that is a mini 14 ranch

but now that they have discontinued the mini 14
they make a new "mini 14" that has the mounts

kind of reminds me of the single six vs the new model single six

they should have called it the new model mini 14 but no they just go and call it the old name

I have a Mini-14 ranch model and used the ruger scope rings, they worked great for me.

What are the first three numbers in the serial number?

Unkind people would suggest that a scope doesn't really matter with a Mini 14. Might make hunting for the holes easier and such.

I'm not one of them. You may have THE ONE. Who is to say?

I haven't seen the gun yet,I know the gun is 20 or 30 years old. Thanks for the input.

Dont go cheap buy the B Square mount or you will donate the first company your money then buy it later.

Do you believe this mount works good? I am debating if I should mount a scope on my mini 14 as well.

Here is a link to the scope mount I have for my "old" non ranch rifle. The company is called ultimak and they claim the mount improves accuracy due to the way the mount clamps the barrel in two places. I don't know if that claim holds any water, but at 100 yards and a 4x simmons pistol scope I get about the same size groups as my AR when using iron sights on the AR. I only scoped my mini because I hate the iron sights that are on it, the newer ones are better I hear.

The mini is a great rifle for certain things, bench shooting is not one of them. The only bench shooting I do is for zeroing a new scope, so for me it works great, plus I can use my factory 20 round magazines with no hassle.

Sorry I don't have any pictures of my setup, my camera just died.

How young is the kid? My dad never let me touch a semi auto till I was about 17, and at that point I had been shooting for about 9 years. I understand his logic now, once I got my 10/22 I lost all sence of marksmanship when I had 24 more rounds to follow up with.

Heck if you want to teach a kid to be a good shot, make them hunt quail a few seasons with a bolt action .410, and pigeons with a single shot .22 with cci shot shells.

the movies? because Hollywood is correct every time

if it were me, i wouldnt put a scope on the mini, because a scope cant make up accuracy lost by the gun.

You might take a look at the Ultimak (http://ultimak.com/M4-S.htm) integrated rail. I put it on one of my Mini's with a red dot and it's great.

If the Mini-14 is 20-30 years old, then you'll have to go with the side mount scope rings. My Ranch Rifle Series 187- has the integrated mounts. I'm using Millett High rings for a 40mm Objective scope. I have a Quad Rail from ProMag but it's too big and bulky for my use. For a young shooter, you can put a .22LR conversion kit in it from Ciener, if you think a 223/5.56 round may be too much. I found Remington Vipers to feed very well out of my kit.

For your Ruger, look into the Mueller scopes. Well made, good value. I have a Bushnell Banner on mine.

No, It can't make up for gun accuracy lost. But it can make up for shooter accuracy lost, "you can't hit what you can't see".:43:
