What's the technical difference between the two?

Also, is the cheapest price for a genuine PU sniper $800?

PEM and PU scopes are both 4x. PU is lighter and was originally designed for the SVT series of rifles. When Russia decided to stop the SVT sniper program the PU scope was used on the Mosin 91/30.
The PEM is basicly a PE scope without the focus adjust ring. It was used prior to the PU and briefly on the 91/30 in 1942 while the base/mount was designed for the PU.
I dont know the actual numbers but the glass is a little bigger on the PE/PEM vs the PU. There is suposedly a 6x scope that was used on the SVT that looks like a PU only a little longer. Ive never seen one in person but saw a picture of one once. Im sure they are quite rare.

Read somewhere that recent measurements have shown that the PU is actually 3.5x.

Pretty much. There are not a lot of them out there. Paying $400 for a "repro" (regular 91/30 with a scope added) versus $800 from R Guns for a real (even if refurbished) original sniper seems to be a no brainer to me. When R guns started selling the sniper I sold my repro and bought from R Guns and got a rifle with the scope number stamped into the barrel shank. Can't beat that...

For more info hit the Gunboards sniper forum and look for 91/30 sniper posts (although gunboards seems to be down right now).

Thanks, Tim.

I basically want to decide if I want a top of the line AK build, or a PU Sniper. I still don't know; I want both to be honest.

One thing's for sure, I would definitely love to shoot a PU sniper.

yes, the PU is a 3.5 and the PEM is 4 power. you'll be hard pressed to find a real PEM sniper. if you can find it, it isn't gonna come cheap.

as far as real ones, Rguns is the only place that has the PU snipers with scopes. they came out of Ukrainian depots and have been refurbished but many are very nice. i got mine for Christmas and it is fantastic

here is the thread i created to show mine off (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=376704&highlight=pu+sniper)

Nice.

IDK, I think it would be more rational for me to get an AK....decisions, decisions, decisions. I wish money simply grew on trees...sigh.

It is the only price. There is only one place to get them.

That part in bold is awesome man.
I regret selling my '44 Tula to this day; it didn't have a matching scope.
Though it allowed me to purchase a Gen 4 Glock and LCP, which I later got over and used the proceeds to buy my AK and this Garand I just ordered.
Still though. I need another one.

AKs will be there in 10, 20, 100 years.

Once RGuns runs out of snipers that's all she wrote man.
Unless the Ukrainians have another stock pile of them stashed somewhere that RGuns didn't buy and import.

Do the $500 sniper replicas they sell at Big 5 suck?

They are what they are. To replicate the same rifle would cost more. If you want more of a shooter then it might be a way to go. I would watch gunbroker. Real PU rifles sometimes sell for less than 800. The trick is to know what is real and what is not.

I recently saw/inspected one of two PU snipers at big 5 in San Mateo, Ca. they have the Ukraine Billet (not cast steel or alum) steel mounts and repro scopes. Workmanship was very good and bore condition was the only unknown as I could not clean bore to inspect throat or muzzle.

Cost was $599 andf its a good deal if you dont want to drool/fondle/sleep with your real PU sniper rifle with typical fogged/dirty glass and inflated "Enemy at the gates" ego.

If you know what to look for in workmanship and bore condition go for the big % PU's in San mateo. lean how to use/adjust/maintain the system but for god's sake stay off the 50/100 yard line like most of the zeitsev Wannabees.

Come out to Sacto to shoot 200-500 meter mil-surp sniper class silouette or std class with iron sights.

Forgot to add:

Decent moison with a good bore $125-$160 after DROS
Bent Bolt handle for PU or PE $75
Repro PU Scope and MACHINED STEEL Mount $275
Repro PE Scope and Mount $350
Cost to mount PU (I charge $120) Typically $170 min if you can find a gunsmith/machinist to do it.

Cost to mount PE (I charge $160) Typically $190-200 min if you can find a gunsmith/machinist who knows how to do it rightr. This one is more Difficult as you have to indicate in each hole and D & T before moving to the next one as I have never found hole spacing to be consistant.

And a RESNIPER is even more $ as you have to drill out hardened welded holes and retap often breaking drills and taps then seeing if your base and receiver holes line up/most dont.

You have some of the coolest stuff on this board, I swear.

You even have the rare (around here) orange bakelite mags, my favorite!

I'm honestly surprised I haven't run into you at Laguna Seca, MJ.

As far as my original question from last night, I was meaning to ask of those repro scopes are any good or not.

My only experience with a repro scope and mount (by proxy) was not good. Anyone remember my pics of that Mauser with 5 holes on the receiver? Yeah, it's a sad story.

I probably won't end up buying a Mosin sniper, but you never know....What I do know is that I want to shoot one really bad.

For the price? Yes.

When you can have the real thing for $300 more, it's a no brainer to me.

Take it as a compliment, but I secretly hope I run into you there sometime. IDK what you like, but if there are awesome guns, that's probably a good sign.

The thought of buying a real PU sniper still hasn't left my head...

When you order from Rguns, is there a way you can ask then to handpick, or anything like that?

i only ordered online and they don't do hand select that way. i've heard people who went to their building in Illinois say they don't do that for walk ins either.

who knows though. it might depend on who you talk to. i have heard Roger is known for being stubborn and rude. Eric (i think his name is Eric) is known for being very helpful and polite

If actually buying, I would just want the rifle to be in nice shape (duh) and more importantly, to come with estucheons and the normal trigger (some of the triggers out there are shorter and stubbier looking) and I prefer the look of the normal ones.

Will all the scopes match the guns purchased from Rguns?

cruddymutt

More than likely the scopes will not match but dont quote me on that. They got to be running low by now.

Some do and some don't.
The one I got at big 5 is a very clean, shoots well, has the best trigger pull and bolt action of the 6 Mosins I have, has all matching numbers with prefix letters intact.... what more to say?
I do have a real 1937 Tula PE fitted with a repro Ukranian scope. Both the PE and PU shoot well once dialed in.
