View Full Version : My first Mosins

01-13-2011, 6:18 PM
Well, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered 4 91/30's from AIM last week. I took the afternoon off to wait for UPS to show, which was a waste because they didn't get here until after 6pm.

I was hoping to get some good pics of them all outside before the sun went down, but that idea was a bust so here's some crappy cell phone pics taken inside my hovel.

Big Box!

Full of smaller boxes.

Wow, 4 at a time. I have an awful feeling it will come to that for me soon!

Congrats and I hope you enjoy them all. I don't love any other gun as much as my 91/30's. Good for you! Order butt pads and ammo:D

nice, how are the bores & muzzles?

01-14-2011, 1:24 PM

All hexes too. Good show.
That first stock in the group photo has a really neat repair. Screwed in SSE's too. What about the other stocks?
Nice haul. What was the total with shipping, if I may ask?

Thanks for sharing those photos.... You are a lucky man....

01-14-2011, 2:18 PM
All very nice rifles! Those beat the heck out of anything I've ever seen an Big 5!

01-14-2011, 2:24 PM
Oh wow. I'm impressed! I just ordered one the other day. It's a hex too. I can't wait for it to get here. I like the second rifle from the left, the one with the darker stock.

01-14-2011, 3:24 PM
Wow, I hadn't even noticed that repaired stock and screwed in SSE while taking the pics. When I get around to cleaning it I'll see if there's anything else unusual about it. For the record it's the 1925 with s/n 34893.

The back one in that shot is the one I worked on cleaning today. After doing some research I went out and bought a steamer and that seems to do a really good job of melting the cosmoline off of the metal, I then hit everything with a healthy dose of CLP and let it sit before drying it off. The rifling looks good but the bore may be a little dark. I want to get some Kroil and a plug to soak it for a day and see how it looks after that.

The total for the 4 rifles and the 10 extra ammo pouches ($0.50 each when you buy 10!) was $380.76. Ordered last Friday morning and they arrived yesterday (Thursday). The hex receivers are $10 more than rounds at AIM, but I like the look of them better. Another thing handy about AIM is they have it set up so you can easily upload an image of your FFL and drivers license to your account, bar far the best site of the surplus dealers I've looked at.

Nice. 4 at a time. I just ordered one myself from AIM.

$380 huh? Not bad. My wife would have kittens if something like that showed up on my doorstep.
Make sure you write down the tang dates when you disassemble them.

3 ex Dragoons. Nice.

01-14-2011, 10:27 PM
You got lucky those are nice.
Trying to resist going to AIM's website right now....

Well, I've got two of the rifles cleaned up using the steamer. Both bores have strong rifling but kind of dark bores. I plugged one and filled it with Liquid Wrench penetrating oil (couldn't find Kroil) overnight but it looked about the same.

The stock on the Izhy that I started with was massively saturated in cosmoline. The steamer does a good job sweating it out, but didn't do the shellac any favors so today I hit it with Goof Off and some 000 steel wool, plus a nylon brush for the nooks and crannies. I have to say that so far I'm pleased with how it's looking. I'm going to give it a couple days to thoroughly dry out and then decide what to do about stain and wax. I'm not sure if I should go with a dark red tinted stain to get back to the original look or maybe stay light with just some raw linseed oil.

The 1927 Tula I'm also working on right now I wrapped in a towel, stuck in a black trash bag and put it on the dash of my "yard-car" in the backyard. It should get nice and toasty there for a few days and sweat out the cosmoline.

Holy **** just stop. Please do not strip any more of those stocks.

Holy **** just stop. Please do not strip any more of those stocks.

I knew that would get somebody's blood-pressure up.

I'm going to have to disagree with you though. This link shows what the final goal is.

That guy turned a >$200 M38 into a <$100 barreled action.
Do what you want, dude. They're your guns.

01-17-2011, 10:29 PM
are you buying 4 ati stock's????......

01-18-2011, 12:01 AM
I would have given you $100 for that ex-dragoon and you could have bought another Mosin and your refinishing supplies.

But yup, your guns.

01-18-2011, 4:08 PM
Before anyone gets too upset let me state that I pulled the stock from the Tula out of the car when I got home, wiped it down and it's relatively cosmoline free. Clean enough for me anyway so it's been re-assembled and is put away in the safe.

The one I stripped was an anomaly and the rest (barring some unforeseen disaster) will stay as is, including the Izhy with the repaired fore-end and screw in sling escutcheons.

01-18-2011, 5:33 PM
Well that is good.
