View Full Version : Ruger 22/45 magazines Mk II Vs Mk III
01-11-2011, 8:20 PM
Ok... here we go... will a 22/45 Mk III magazine fit and work in a 22/45 Mk II. Here is a pic of the gun and mags I have. I want to get a jump on the impending magazine BAN Part 2. The Mk III's are fairly low cost & plentiful, the Mk II's are getting hard to find.
If anyone has a good source for real Ruger mags for the 22/45 Mk II's and/or Mk III's (if they work), please post or send me a PM?

Midway usa should have them, and I don't think they'll ban 10 rounders any time soon.

Here you go and free shipping!
Simple answer is - YES. MKIII mags work in MKII 22/45. Mine do. Difference is a small slot in the MKIII mag for the mag disconnect.

Last time I was at the range I switched mags between my friends' two Rugers by accident. I think I took a Mark III mag (mag release behind the trigger) and it wouldn't "click" and stay in a Mark II gun (mag release on heel). Let me check with them on the models and report back.

The OP is talking about 22/45 models, those are the ones with the .45 style grip and mag release. They were made in the mark 2 and 3 styles as well. Indeed the Luger style grip and the 22/45 mags are not interchangable, the base pads are quite different.Last time I was at the range I switched mags between my friends' two Rugers by accident. Welcome to Calguns Tiredshooter!
No the magazines are not interchangeable. I think there are differences in how the magazine meets the magazine catch.
22/45 Mk II Mag is Ruger Part # AP10
22/45 Mk III is # AP10MKIII
Once years ago I saw Ruger .22 Pistol mags on sale at Midway for like $16 $17 bucks. Other than that they are pretty much the same price everywhere. A little more expensive if you buy them from Ruger.
You might find some used ones for sale if you sniff around. Calguns and RugerForum.com have good used parts forums.
I have never ever heard any suggestion that 10 round magazines be banned. I think they're pretty safe for now.

Please refer to post#5. Real life experience.

I bow to real life experience.
Do you know if both types magazine work in both models of pistol? Or is your experience just with a Mark III magazine in a Mark II pistol? Is Ruger's objection to interchangeability that the MarkII magazine wont trip the Mark III magazine disconnect/safety properly?
Thanks for correcting me, I hate finding out I'm giving out bad info.
Which magazine should I use in my Ruger .22 pistol?
The magazines for our .22 pistols are not interchangeable. They have physical differences and will not function properly if used in a pistol other than the one for which they were manufactured. They are as follows:
Ruger Firearm Correct Magazine
Ruger Standard 9 round
Ruger Mark I M-9 9 round
Ruger Mark II M-10 10 round
Ruger Mark II 22/45 AP-10 10 round
Ruger Mark III M10MKIII 10 round
Ruger Mark III 22/45 AP10MKIII 10 round

^ mark 3's won't accept mark 2 mags. You have it backwards, I think.
Mark 2 guns will accept mark 2/3 mags. Due to the mag disconnect (retarded) on the mark 3, Mark 2 mags won't fit, as the mags changed a little bit for the mark 3.
Only experience is 22/45 MKIII in 22/45 MKII. Standard MKII and MKIII have different mag release mechanisms.
