Rex White at ER Shaw Barrels said they are planning a run of military Mauser stepped replacement barrels for Large ring, and Small ring threads.
Currently Lother Walther is the only one offering these.
8x57 and 7x57 are on the list. He would like to know what other calibers you would be interested in seeing.
If they get enough interest, it gives me some leverage to talk them into some limited production runs of other milsurp barrels, like Mosin? Enfield? maybe even SVT-40?
List them here, and I'll pass them on.

I would be interested in a 308 win or 7.62x51 chamber.

I just picked up a mod 98 (dou 44) that's been sporterized. Besides looking for another stock (the one I have is cracked & was repaired at one time), I'm thinking of swapping out barrels as this one is really dark. It's in 8mm cartridge. The Nazi car touches have been ground off. Very much to my dismay, but I couldn't beat the price

Whats the best way to tell what I have IE large ring or small?

I was told it makes a difference when ordering a stock.

Any suggestions?

The dou 44 is a German K98k Mauser. They are large ring, large shank, full length "standard" 98 receivers.

Ah, OK thanks for filling me in. Now I know what to get and what not to get.

What would I have to do, besides swapping barrels, to change the caliber that the 98 takes? Would I need to alter the bolt or get a different one altogether?

Would be nice to have it in a NATO 7x62 round or a .308.

Please take some time and delve deeper into what's available so you don't spread disinformation.

.30-06 and .308 WCF for 98 Mausers. Not all inclusive but certainly more than your statement that Lothar is the only one...

Military Step, follows the same profile as the military barrel. Drops into issue stock, great for replacing worn out or damaged military barrels.

Swedish m/1896 barrels in 6.5x55 are now no longer available as new-old-stock from Samco. These are 29" barrels. There are still new-old-stock of m/38 barrels available from Samco so making 24" barrels for the Swedish Mauser wouldn't be economically viable. Twist rate on the Swedish military barrels is 1:200mm.

And speaking of 29" barrels, do your homework in gathering data on which Mauser models require 29" barrels.

I'm still looking for a sporter stock for my 98K...any good places to shop for an inexpensive stock that I can cut down or finish myself?
