Just picked up an Inland M1 carbine, 5.4m. No import marks, push button safety. It has two uncommon features, wings on the front sight have been removed and the operating slide has grooves on it. Can anyone explain the grooves? The Operating slide has an Inland part number stamped on it. I hope the picture helps. Thanks in advance.

Whoever removed the ears off of the front sight probably added the grooves. Inland parts are plentiful so you shouldn't have much trouble finding a replacement front sight and operating slide. There are several variations of the operating slide http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=642 so the "correct" type would depend on the serial number of your carbine.

Check the cmp for sale forums, they ALWAYS have some good carbines parts.
