Can anyone recommend a good color laser printer? I need to order a new one for my office's creative department.

The one unusual requirement I have is that it be able to print 11x17.

Brand is not important, price is not terribly important.

Any ideas?

We just ordered this one as a replacement color printer for our word processing department. Works pretty good.

You're going to want an enterprise class printer, consumer printers probably will not meet their requirements.

I've often wondered why lasers don't achieve say ... 60" wide roll paper like the ink jets do.

What is your budget?

HP 4600s are absolute workhorses...we used them at the post production company I used to work at. They rock, and are cheap on Ebay these days.

Budget's definitely gotta be less than $1000. There's no way I could get approval for a $2500 printer.

Ouch.
The 11x17 requirement makes that price a challenge, since not many low duty machines support that size. I think you will need to look for a used/refurbished machine. And by the way, the replacement toner cartridges are going to be very expensive.

Positive you could not use solid ink or inkjet?

You're not going to find a new 11x17 color laser printer for under ~$2000.

ETA: Found a refurbished HP for $995, I wouldn't count on finding anything cheaper.

Because the entire laser printing mechanism would end up needing to be 60" wide. With an inkjet, the printhead moved back and forth across the rollers.

That's what I'm finding as well. My boss really doesn't like to buy used or refurbished equipment at all, so I don't think eBay or a refurb is an option at this point.

I think I'm gonna tell the creative director he'll have to deal with 8.5x11.

Yes, but he said he can palletize it for you for freight shipment. It'll keep the costs under 1k all told...

That said, also look at the 8550.

We have one in the office. It's slow and annoying sometimes, but the print quality is pretty good.

Of course...if the boss doesn't like used or refurb, it sounds like you're out of luck. :(
