i tried searching and only found this thread;
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=377359&highlight=atf+multiple+purchase

In a recent 2af emal i got it says BATFE wants to have FFLs report multiple semi-autos greater than .22 caliber purchased within yada yada. So if they are 5.56/.223 is that greater than .22 cal?

NOTE:
a .223 caliber bullet mics at .224
a .22LR bullet mics at .224 also, just sayin'

Last time I checked .223>.220. I haven't been to school in a while, so perhaps things have changed with the "new math"?

Haha, ever so slightly larger.

but if you measure a 22lr bullet its wider than .220 also

they should just specify "centerfire"

Ugh if im not mistaken a .22 is .224 which would make it bigger than a .223 unless a .223 is really .227, in which its bigger than .224, making a .223 bigger than a .224. Do you follow?

Hmm....doesn't say greater than .220 right? Just .22? :D

Uhh,, yeah. And .221 is greater than .22 by .001.

Is the math really this hard for some people?

Sorry, I didn't research the actual diameter of a .22lr.

I guess that I should have stated that .227 is > .224! :)

Sounds like a job for Precision vs. Accuracy Man, no? (cue music and math nerd in tights).

If you're measuring only in 1/100ths of an inch. .220, .221, .222, .223, and .224 are all ".22". If you step up to .225 through .234 you're at ".23".

Seems like if they're using a 1/100th of an inch unit of measurement, .223 (if it's actually that diameter) IS .22.

Precision vs. Accuracy.

Silly politicians, spent all their school time in civics, history (well maybe not) and legal classes but they seemed to have skipped math and the sciences.

THAT, my friends, is what a well rounded education is for.

So buy a lower and tell them you're using a .219 upper.

now I am not trying to be a ***** at all, im just enjoying the argument. A .223 is NOT a .22, because you should never put a .22 in a .223, so I would argue this with the DOJ. I would also give them the actual dimensions and watch them look stupid.

it isn't DOJ, right? I have the same email it says larger than .22... what is the diameter of a .22LR?
I'll try it with my FFL cause I have a couple of lowers that are "multi" marked.

Unless I am in error, there are upper conversion kits for the AR platform that allow you to shoot .22 rimfire ammo thru your .223 barrel. Thus you would put a .22 into a .223.

A .224 bullet is .22 because they did not be specific enough. If they meant .22 diameter or less they should have put 0.22000 inches.

If you go with the exact way it is written you can buy a semi auto rifle chambered .22 Hornet, .22-250, and any other round designated with .22 in the name.

This was only for select FFLs in border states whose shops are very close to the border. The immediate effect wouldn't really change much, it's the "slippery slope" potentiality that scares me.

Okay, so it's for the ffls that they suspect are selling to individuls that are passing them along to their cartel buddies... right.
This thread made me wonder if I read the email right, so I pulled up and it just says "greater than .22" and it says;

Citing border violence, the ATF has issued an "emergency order" requiring any store that sells more than two rifles within a five-day period to report the names, addresses and serial numbers of those transactions if the firearms are greater than .22-caliber, semi-automatic, with the ability to accept a detachable magazine.

Lowers are not rifles...so they would not be subject to the reporting requirement.

AR type rifles are only part of what this covers. If you buy a Mini 14 and M1A then they get reported.
