Hello fellow CG'ers

I have a question for all the knowledgable folks on today.

Can a Mini 14 be outfitted with a pistol grip stock or would this make it illegal in CA eyes?

Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that the addition of one evil feature, a pistol grip in this case, would make the Mini-14 into an AW. But that's just my understanding.

If you make it into a fixed mag build and keep it over 30" when folded, you'll be fine.

Make one of these http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=94388 or buy one of these http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=311869&highlight=mini+14+mag+lock

Personally, I'd just leave it as is, since they're already fine shooters.

Hogue has a good replacement stock that keeps it legal. Even comes in OD and Tan.

I like the second option you showed here. Seems like a nice option to keeping things legal....

I have an early 1980's Mini 14 in stainless with the factory folding stainless stock and pistol grip. It has a custom stainless muzzle brake to keep the length at 30.5" and the billet aluminum bullet button mag catch cover. Also an original Mini 14 stainless mag converted to a 10/30 so all good to go. (modifications were made out of state by my friend who owned the gun before selling it to me) Looks really cool...just like the one George Peppard used on the original A Team series.

That sounds like a cool Mini 14 you have there. Mine has a Tapco stock with a fixed 10 rd mag, I followed this link and made a mag lock http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=94388. I'm tired of having a top loader, so I will be buying one of those bullet button ones soon.

Pistol grip or other "evil" feature on a semi-automatic, centerfire rifle is most definitely a category 3 AW. Tread with caution and a good mag lock. If mag locked, no pre-ban hi-cap mags should be used with it. See the "AW & OLL Guides" at the top of this page for more info. This link will also help you interactively determine whether any rifle is an AW or not: http://calnra.com/cgi-bin/flowchart.cgi

I know the NFA dealer rented those guns to the show. I haven't talked to him in 4 or 5 years though so, I'm not sure if he still has them.
