Which is more rare/hard to find a Smith and Wesson model 66-2 THREE INCH or a Smith and Wesson 686 US Customs CS-1 THREE inch? ( both 99% in the box)

Also what about the cost?

In Cali? They're both rare as hens' teeth, but I'd guess the CS-1 (either 3 or 4") would be much more difficult than the 66-2. Offhand, I can't ever recall seeing a CS-1 for sale within Cali. I've definitely seen (and even owned for a while) 3" 66's here in state.

Even in the regular USA the CS-1s are not very common. I suppose you could try and find a tame FFL to receive a single-action (converted prior to coming into Cali and converted back to SA/DA after you DROS it) version of either of the above if you really have a jones for them. SA-only is exempt from the DOJ list you know. I got an SA Model 14 into Cali last year doing it that way.

Single action? How do You convert it?

I've never seen an example of the CS-1 in person. I've seen a handful of three inch 66's so from my personal perspective I'd say the CS-1 is likely the more rare.

Value...... how much you got? :)

Single action? How do You convert it?

Open the sideplate, remove the double action strut from the hammer, close the sideplate, done. Gun is now SA. That would need to be done someplace outside of California so it crosses the state line as an SA.

Anyone exempt from the roster could order it in though as is.

I'd say the 3 inch 686 is the rarer of the two, based on my experience. I actually have a 3 inch model 66, but it is the -4 version, not the -2. And I did find a 2.5 inch 686, but haven't seen the 3 inch 686.

I have been looking for a couple of 3 inch smiths just like that militiades
I have a couple of n frame 3 inches (657 and 624). They are very hard to find in Cali and worth a premium. Wonder if any ffl's in the bay area would be down for accepting something like that and which other ffl out of state would do the transfer. Wonder if someone has a write up with pics to maybe help convince other out of state owners to do this for us. Here is a picture of mine.
