I just recently turned 21 and purchased a 4" XD 40 for myself. I am looking to pick up a good holster and belt for my trips to the desert and out of state. I have been leaning towards a SERPA simply because I like the system. Does anyone else have any suggestions for good, comfortable, high quality holsters? What about high quality pistol belts?

Thanks

Congrats! Nothing like being old enough to drink and buy handguns. :D

The issue of holsters comes up quite often and there are a bunch of usual suspects that come up. Guys here love Comp-Tac and Crossbreed, which are both mostly Kydex. Blade Tech makes nice Kydex as well. The SERPAs are nice. I also like the system and ease of use. They are also not too expensive and are part of a modular Blackhawk system. One thing about the SERPA is that some firearms schools don't allow them due to some idiots not being able to separate the motion of their index finger from the release tab to the trigger. I've never had a problem with an AD/ND with my SERPAs. I have used them with both paddle mounts and a Blackhawk tactical thigh mount. They're not great for concealment despite the name "Close Quarters Concealment" for some of their SERPAs.

Belts were recently discussed and this place (http://www.thebeltman.net/) was highly recommended. I don't have one of their belts but agree that a good, solid, reinforced gun belt is important if you carry a gun for any length of time, both for comfort and concealment.

i've ordered several belts from here. if you decide to go this route, the 5-stitch option is worth the few extra $.

Blade Tech laminate straight drop belt holster and the Wilderness Tactical instructor belt. Blade Tech single mag pouches are great but pricey, Fobus makes a nice cheap double pouch.

+1 I agree. In before someone recommend cheap plastic FOBUS holster. Friends dont let friends buy Fobus holster. With the Serpea holster, a little dirt, snow or sand get into the locking system, it will lock up your gun. I have seen it happened a few times already.

This. I recommend Comp Tac too.

Make sure you get the 5 stitch with the Wilderness belts.

I cant stand my serpa. I have one that fits an XD if you really want it, since I prefer my cheapo uncle mikes kydex to it.

The beltman makes good belts. for holsters i am taking a look at the safariland holsters simply because of the soft lining on the inside.

For belts I have been very impressed with AG Custom Gun Leather in Atlanta:

AG Custom website (http://www.agcustomgunleather.com/)

For holsters I like Kramer Leather for OWB belt scabbards and Comp-Tac for IWB kydex. The Comp-Tac seem especially good IWB because the material is very thin and does not add much thickness, yet the mouth of the holster stays open when the gun is drawn, facilitating insertion of the gun. The Comp-Tac production time is short and the customer service is outstanding, as well.

I run a 5.11 belt with a Serpa and Blackhawk Double mag pouch for my G22.

Works for me. I feel it is a stable platform. Maybe not as much as a wilderness tactical but i Only paid 30 bucks for my belt...

i've always loved the minimalist approach by the late Bruce Nelson (RIP). also... Lou Alessi (RIP) and Milt Sparks (RIP).

fortunately there are some greats that are still out there making holsters and accessories in leather.

An XD-40 was my first purchase after I turned 21 as well, congratulations. You're going to have a lot of fun with the setup. I used it for clinics with a Blackhawk Serpa just like you are thinking about and a 5.11 gun belt, one of the ~$30 ones. It's all you need. Get some Blackhawk mag holders and you are all set to go. Any of the other holsters will work fine but I liked having the retention device on the Serpa in case you end up rolling around on the ground or something.
