I'm so confused. I want a M1 Carbine. I just don't know what to buy.

I could buy a M1 from SOG for $695 and have it sent to my NV lic; then I have to go and pick it up, cost of gas about $80 and 9 hours driving.

I could buy a milsurp from Big 5 for $799 plus tax, lic and fees.

or

I could buy a new Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine from Big 5 for $799 plus tax, lic and fees.

What would you do?

Won't SOG shipped to CA? I mean, there is no reason to have to drive to NV to pick on up, unless they won't ship. I think I would try to find another vendor who will. Try going to Gunbroker.com and see what is there and who will ship to CA.

Or you could forgo the issue completely by going to the nearest gunshow with cash in hand - and original Carbine will be C & R.

I'd avoid the A-O product like the plague.

Both the SOG and Big 5 ones are gonna be rode hard and put to bed wet. The best option would be to hand pick one at a gunshow or buy one off gunbroker where you can at least see some pics to know what you are getting

As Noonda says, keep an eye out at gun shows, gunbroker and the CGN classifieds. They are out there and can be had for reasonable prices in good condition.

Make sure it's a USGI carbine. A couple of years ago I picked up an Inland for $475. It's a shooter with a good bore and good solid condition that doesn't have all correct parts or stock, etc.(making it a 'collector' which raises the price) but it IS genuine USGI, shoots well and is a piece of history that will never leave my safe.

Good luck on the search

SOG won't ship to California because of the 15 round magazines.

Maybe I'll start going to some local GS again, or at least the ones in Vegas.

Then tell them to take the magazine out and keep it, and just ship you the rifle.

USGI! The new commercial Carbines are sh*t! Dont sway that way, its a waste of money.

You could take a trip out to Arizona. Check out the sights and also hit up every C&R shop.

Fulton Armory and others sell USGI carbines that have been refurbed. I think the Fulton one is $1300. I'm not 100% sure on this but they appear to be reparkerized with a new barrel and new walnut stock.

This was too expensive for me (I found an ugly one locally with no rear site but a good barrel) but I thought it deserved to be thrown out there with the other options. More options are always good.

Where is your NV address? Maybe I could pick it up and ship it to you with the mag disassembled?

I wouldnt buy a carbine or Garand from Sorry Old Guns
Keep checking the "for sale" sections of various gun forums. There are deals out there to be had.
I reciently sold a very, very nice Non Import Underwood with mag ,sling, oiler for $700.00 shipped.
If you look around they are out there even cheaper
